What do you think of new Olympic Maple Leaf?

This is a question of aesthetics, not the bullion market.

What do you think of the new gold maple leaf being issued for the 2010 Olympics, showing the eagle at the top of a totem pole? You can see images at www.apmex.com.

I understand that the totem pole is an important symbol in northwest North American culture. There is a wonderful collection of totem poles in a beautiful city park down by the water in Vancouver, where the games are being held.

However, the design just doesn't do anything for me, and the flurry of tiny maple leaves around the eagle (which allow them to call it a maple leaf) look like lint marks.

Any opinions?

    That's it.
I also don't like the obverse composition.

I don't like it one bit. If they insist on using it they should have used it on some one off commem. The idea of putting it on their Maple bullion coins annoys me a bit. They're constantly screwing with the Maple somehow. Those stupid privy marks get on my nerves as well. The scattered itsy-bitsy maple leaves on this new design look like an afterthought, remiscent of the micro-eagle next to the bell on Franklin Half Dollars. There is something about the simplistic and elegant reverse of the standard Maple that makes it the single most eye appealing bullion coin available, in my opinion. Canada, it isn't broken so don't fix it.

I also don't like the current or even the last design of the Queen. She looks less than attractive and brings the eye appeal of the coin down. The first portrait used on the Maples was of a young, thin and vibrant Queen. That portrait paired with the standard Maple reverse is a work of art.

I like the totem part--call me a heretic! The little Olympic thingy next to the Queen, however, looks like some weird Stonehenge guy or maybe a cheap Japanese cartoon. I give them credit for trying! As far as the Queen's age, I agree. Should have shown her at age 18 wearing a bikini! image
