Do you think Heritage images are better these days?

Look at this one from a few years ago:

http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=66125&Lot_No=23252

now look at the same coin with a current image

Which looks better to you?

  • Yeah its better but I probably would not buy anything based on an image of that quality. Teletrade has much better images and I am comfortable buying from them. Ebay is worse than Heritage with a few exceptions.
  • The one that more accurately reflects the coins real impression when in hand under a 60W incandescent bulb. image I believe the pics are pretty good, had no major probs with them. I do hate the "mega-watt" images that some of them have (those w/o the slab). They are nowhere near what the coin looks like, so they should just drop them ( I would not buy off one of those pics if the slab pic is not shown as well).

  • Turn off the "pan and zoom" gimmick, and look at the enlargement. Their recent photographs are too dark. I had a real problem with them when I sold my Registry Set of 1934-38 Buffalo Nickels (14th best at the time, 65 and up). I asked for better photographs, because I knew what my coins looked like in hand, and they fixed most of them -- eventually. But I would up losing money overall.

Knowing how bad their photographs are has turned to my advantage, however, as a bidder. image

You can see the coins better.

They are also now more "optimistic."

Whether this makes the photos better or not is tough to say.

Many of their seated dollar pics are taken at extreme angles and thus any hits or marks are masked by reflection. However, overall i'd agree that the pics have improved. There is still plenty of room for improvement though.

I think Heritage pictures the last six months have gone down in quality by a noticeable margin. I also do not like the fact that Heritage seems to delete all enlarged pictures for all auctions from about two years or more ago. Hit the enlarge button and all you get is the exact same picture, no enlargement. Why? Is Heritage short of computer space? Maybe Heritage does not want us to see enlarged old pictures because now they are offering the same auction lots.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
