Is this kind of wacked out strike on a 3CN typical?

Cool error worth any extra money?

The reverse has an outline of the obverse bust!

die clash marks are quite common on 3CN. They are really pretty cool.

  • I like it as well but the shipping cost is a little extreme. I asked the seller why the shipping was so high on a $75 dollar item.

The 10 dollar shipping has kept me from bidding on a few things they have had up on ebay lately. If you go to the web site and buy the coin the shipping charge is a little better I have found out. Still I would check with them first. This coin is on the web site as of 10 minutes ago.

  • Very nice clash marks. But, these are common on 3-cent silver and 3-cent nickel pieces, as well as a variety of other coins (Capped Bust halves, gold dollars, etc.). In general, coins with these aren't worth more.

There are a few that do bring a fair bit more, but these coins have so-called multidenominational die clash marks. Such coins include the following:
1857 Flying Eagle cent w/ reverse clash marks from a Liberty Seated quarter die
1857 Flying Eagle cent w/ obverse clash marks from a Liberty double eagle die
1857 Flying eagle cent w/ obverse clash marks from a Seated Liberty half dollar die
1870 Shield nickel w/ obverse clash marks from an Indian Head cent die
1864 LM 2-cent piece w/reverse clash marks from an Indian Head cent die
1857 Liberty Seated quarter w/reverse clash marks from an Indian Head cent die
1868 3-cent piece w/obverse clash marks from an Indian Head cent die

If you are interested in seeing nice photos of 1857 cents with multidenominational clash marks, check out Eagle Eye Rare Coins' web site (Rick Snow).
