Somebody's paying "this" for THIS? Are you kidding me?

I know waverly82 has been discussed at length on this board, but the current bid on this '66 Mantle caused me to smack my head against my monitor. Wow, there are some stupid people out there. Or.........

  • Is it me or does it seem like he's leaving a lot of money on the table by being "afraid" to get his cards graded

  • looks like a PSA 9 or 10 to me , lucky for me I was getting drunk or I would have bid 4,000 , then on another note, well I can't remember

  • Or maybe he doesn't get the card graded because the top border looks good, but the bottom border is... well is that a tilt in the bottom border?

I bought a couple of cards from the person in question... and let's just say they graded N1 image

    Waverly....ugghhh..dont get me started...
  • Yes, "ignorance is bliss". I just had a PSA 6 of this card that ended for about $130. This one looks very comparable to it.

Another thing that comes to my mind is that it is against Ebay policy to advertise other auctions in a listing unless you are very generic like "please see my other auctions". I got a bunch pulled one time because I advertised that I had a few specific cards for sale in other auctions.

I have encountered waaay too many trimmed cards lately to pay such loud prices for raw cards on ebay.

I'm not saying anything about this seller. I've never dealt with him. His stuff unsually exceeds my elcheapo sensibilities.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

He's also requesting Paypal, Money Orders or Cashier's Check...another policy violation.

Thats not a PSA 9 or PSA 10. Check out the borders L to R.

I've bought from Eric before and in my opinion, his card description is very over-inflated. His cards have always graded, but at 2-3 levels lower than his description. This card will be lucky to get a 7.

I'm sure he knows this and ends up making a lot more money simply selling the card raw.

  • This dude can't grade
This is why grading services are thriving
Look at all the o/c cards
    Cards with diamond cuts
buy these & get them graded & u will be very sorry
Ever wonder why hi grade cards aren't graded?
    Because they ain't Hi grade!!
  • I'm shocked that with feedback over 13700 in the last 12 months they have yet to receive a single negative.

That is because by the time they get their cards graded and they come back trimmed or recolored, its too late to give feedback. And also, I think he caters heavily to raw collectors.
  • Barry can you give me a quick run down on waverly?
    Thanks

My advice-do not buy 62s, 63s, or 71s from Waverly. If you buy only cards he calls mint, you will probably get a PSA 7 card, sometimes an 8. I have done OK in his auctions, but I probably win about 10% of the cards I bid on.

The guy basically buys collections then sells them card by card in the raw. I doubt he trims cards though... he probably gets them that way. I've picked up some nice vintage commons from him in the past, as well as a single badly re-colored card that was listed as ex-mt, which he refunded me for.

He's got a pretty wackey cult following that bids up his cards though, hence the high prices.

He gets top dollar for raw cards, he has a no questions asked return policy, that is why
    he gets no negatives.

I too do not think he does the trimming/recoloring.

I have heard that his "no questions asked" return policy is actually much more difficult than that.

I've used it once, and had no problem. However, he only refunds the purchase price, not the shipping. That ticked me off a bit when I shipped the re-colored card back to him.

I too had no problem the one time I needed to return a card. I must also add that
    it was my fault too.

I have had no issues buying raw from him. that card looks sharp. secret santa *Cough*
  • thunderdanthunderdan Posts: 3,036 ✭✭✭
He does have a no questions asked return policy. I agree with Steve that this is likely how he keeps his feedback rating high. Nonetheless, his descriptions are super inflated in my experience. He sure does like his Bible, too.

I've never bought any '62s or '71s from him. I did buy a 59 aaron that came back an 8. Otherwise, the half dozen or so others listed as mint all came back 6s and 7s. No trimmed or recolored cards from him.

A lot more insanity on his other '66 Topps ending tonight.

Yea I would agree thats pretty crazy for a RAW team card.
  • SDavidSDavid Posts: 1,584 ✭✭
We should start consigning our nm+ vintage raw with this guy instead of sending it to PSA.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
wow he is getting psa 8 numbers for his raw.

I had my eye on a few high numbers from this set but decided I'd lose and all I'd do
is inflate his numbers even more.

$400.00 for that card? $550+ for a Mantle that may be o/c? WOW! I should have given him my entire collection to sell instead of consigning it to Mastro over the summer! LOL
