Doug Winter's website has gone interactive (and how will RYK be able to keep up with 2 message board
As stated previously, The Man has been working me like a dog last week, and I was not able to check out the websites of my favorite dealers. However, as I am sitting here enjoying a very tasty bowl of Cream of Mushroom soup for lunch, I cruised over to the Doug Winter site at www.raregoldcoins.com. I see that he has made some changes, which I will outline and comment on here:
(1) The home page looks "bigger" for some reason, and includes some larger font sizes and new colors. On the right hand side, there is now a more clearly defined area for RareGoldNews and the DWN MarketReport. I also like the fact that you can see the titles of two different Market Reports, rather than just the current one.
(2) The new site allows for comments to be posted to the Market Reports and Rare Gold News articles. I like this feature, and I see that our very own RYK has already responded to one article. I am in a frenzy because I wanted to be the very first to comment on an article, but I see that some David Akers guy felt to need to provide an opinion, rather than deferring to Longacre. I wonder how RYK will manage to post to the PCGS boards and the Doug Winter site, all at the same time.
(3) I am not a big fan of the BIG "R" in red that is on the left side of the home page, asking for you to sign up for the newsletter. It does catch your eye, though. But what does the "R" stand for?
(4) The "Call DWN Today!" in excessively large bold face type is not to my liking and is a little kitchy, but in a marketing business, I guess it is fine. All this time I thought I was the only one who had DW's personal phone number.
(5) There is a new "Coins We Love" section, which gives pictures of various coins, and also tells why DW loves them. I wish the descriptions were a bit more robust, particularly how the particular coin ranks in relation to ones that are typically seen (i.e., boldly struck when the typical example is flat, etc.).
(6) The book section is revamped slightly, and I see that the new Charlotte gold book is coming out soon. I plan to pick up a copy, and have it signed by DaveG, who contributed to the book.
(7) The inventory section looks slightly different, but the web designer needs to adjust the margins on the web page. The writing on the left hand side goes into the color band that is along the border and is distracting.
(8) The pictures are a lot better, and use what I am calling the "standard coin dealer pop up window" that a lot of dealers seem to use. I first saw it used by Dr. Kagin on his site, but I am not sure who is the source of this picture technique. The pictures seem to be large and clear, and definitely add to the descriptions. The picture quality on the site has improved, now that Winter's employee is under the tutelage of mgoodm3.
(9) I see that you can get to the home page by clicking on the word "Home" at the top. In the previous version, there was just a picture of a little house at the top, which annoyed me for some reason (not to mention the fact that it took me about two years to figure out if I clicked on the little house, it would take me to the home page).
Does anyone have any other comments regarding the site? I know we have provided critiques for other dealers' sites, so hopefully others can comment and offers suggestions for improvement.
