selling 1960 topps baseball PSA sets

Hi there, I am posting this both for any potentital interest and as well for information on how to proceed. I have the number 16, and 44 PSA sets on the registry. I am well aware of the financial downtuwn affecting the current market, but I am never the less going to proceed with the sale of both sets. I am not sure if selling on Ebay is the best bet? To date, I have a perfect feedback, but entirely as a buyer. I would think I might be better off going to the auction houses, but given the financial instabilities of the market, I am not sure if all these companies are on solid ground at present.
Also any ideas on setting a reasonable price/reserve for both sets.

Any interest or advice is much appreciated. Jeff

Awesome set! Good luck with the sale. I'm selling the #16 1959 Topps master set right now, and also wondering if one of the big auction houses may be my best bet.
  • Any ideas regarding pricing for these? Or which auctionhouse to use? Jeff
  • I would love to buy the set if i could afford it . I am in the process of building this set in straight 8 . Unfortunetly I am
    getting ready to move .

If you have the time and patience, you will do better breaking it up.
  • I think I want to sell them as sets, partially for time reasons, and partially because of the relative drop in PSA 7 commons. Any ideas on the current state of the auction houses?

I just got finished posting my reply on another board to a similiar question. This is my opinion:

I recently was forced to sell almost my entire collection due to medical expenses (My wife and little girl BOTH had Cancer!) I thought a large auction house was the way to go, so I consigned all of it to MASTRO. I had some real nice stuff, including about 250 -300 unopened graded wax and cellos from the 50s, 60s and 70s. In addition I had a few thousand graded cards, including a complete 1968 set that was ~ #18 on The Registry, a real nice 54 Mantle Bowman (PSA 6) and several other real nice cards.

Unfortunately Mastro (in their past two auctions) put SO MANY of my CARDS/PACKS into each lot that I did NOT get close to the full value. My best guess is that I lost about 30% because of this. ANYWAY, what I am saying is that if you have high valued INDIVIDUAL ITEMS, an auction house like MASTRO is probably the way to go. If not, I agree that selling on eBay or on these boards will net you the most cash.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

  • Break it up on eBay. I had the #42 set (when I began selling it) and despite the sluggish economy, there's still a bunch of collectors building this set.
At the very least, I'll break even selling my 1960 set off.
  • Hello, I just noticed this post and was curious how you decided to go about selling the set. I have built and sold the set twice myself and i've done it both ways selling as a complete set and breaking it up by singles. i have'nt sent anything into the auction houses so i can't comment either way on that. i believe E Bay would not be a very good way to go on selling the set complete, a set recently was on e bay with a buy it now of $19,999.00 or best offer it included 30+ Psa 9 cards i don't believe it sold. if you have the good cards and some of the low pops in Psa 8's you can do very well breaking the set on e bay. I've noticed lately 20-30 card lots have been selling at between $5 to $6 a card for Psa 7's. not a bad way to go and then you can sell some of the stars and tougher low pop cards you have in 7's by singles. just a few thoughts i had. good luck Phil

These boards are also a very good way to sell a complete registry set. I would have bought the #16 set already from you if I didn't already have one. image
  • I have dealt with Heritage Auctions out of Dallas, but only as a buyer. However, I have always received the utmost courtesy and attention to all my purchases & concerns. I believe they would be a great help in deciding and a good point to check all avenues.
