Gothic Crown in Gold!

I wanted to buy this coin tonight and got blown out of the water. Only 2 known, and the other is in the British Museum. Realized a bit over 500K total. Major league bummer.

That's ok, another one will come alo.... image

Obviously the economic downturn is having zero effect in certain circles. Gorgeous piece! I can see why you wanted it.
  • Beautiful coin.
I just don't have an extra 500K to spend on a coin right now though, so I didn't bid.

Andy, what was the venue? Was that the Tokyo auction that had the Edward 8 sov.? 500k dollars or pounds?

This coin sold for £120k in 1988 (and £40 in 1898), how much did you seriously think it would go for?

I thought the coin could bring what it brought, and hoped it would bring a third less.

Yes, Tokyo, and the 500K is in dollars. Actually, it hammered at 44 million yen.

Thanks, Larry! Anyone happen to know that the 35 gold crown, the Edward VIII sovereign and/or the 1953 gold Maundy set realized?
  • Anyone happen to know what the 35 gold crown realized?

I would like to know this too. The last one I saw auctioned was the 2004 Heritage sale #340 where a Proof 63 DCAM (but not so designated) sold for $20,700. 30 pieces struck, 25 issued and five retained for Museum collections.

Approximately $35,000, $310,000 and $30,000 including the juice.

    You actually considered it?

For resale, but buying it would have been about more than just the money. It would have been fun to display the coin at a show or two and watch people drool over the showcase.

"WOW!" would be a gross understatement!

Frankly, I would have been thrilled with the '88 Pattern Crown. That type of thing is right up my alley!

What did the pattern Crown you pictured go for Doogy?

Hate not being even a medium player these days, but glad I got a few when the money was right....

I really have no clue what that Crown went for, and it is probably best that I don't know. I would have paid a pretty penny for it, whatever it went for.

For those interested in seeing what else was in the "100 Choice Coins" sale:

    Lots 901-100

Note that the above link shows coins numbered 1-100, but the actual lot numbers are 901-1000.

Andy, I get the lot descriptions and pics on that link but no prices realized...OK, we give up what did the crown go for? I just can not see over 20k USD and would guess 15k.

Hmm, my computer (me) seems to be getting Java request for Japanese fonts??

Well, kill the suspense for us, what did the crown go for?

Doog, that is some big money. Makes a joke of nearly every crown I have at that price. Can you post an anonymous on-line pic catalog of your allstars - they must be something!

So download the fonts, just like I did.

Oh, never mind. The coin brought about $55K total.

WHOA!? Man, I was thinking more in line with the one from a UBS (if i recall) auction in Geneva from a year or so ago, that went for just under $30k. someone must have wanted that puppy bad, but who can blame them? image

I think in a way that price is almost bigger than the E8 sov. Queen looks like a cartoon. I like the 1926 Peace Crown Pattern MUCH MORE, but it is only the reverse.
