Ancient coin help... Pics of unknowns..

I cannot find any info on these. Any help would greatly be appreciated. -Dan

This coin has the highest relief I think I have ever seen. What is the green stuff?

#1: It appears to be from Thourioi, a Greek city in what is now southern Italy; click the link and you'll see a lot of coins of this same basic design. Unfortunately, most of them are silver; That, and the general unevenness of the field on this coin, makes me suspect this one may be a tourist copy. Particularly raised spots above and below the bull, and in front of Athena's nose; these are caused by pits and holes in the mould used to cast the fakes. If I'm right, then the green goo is just gunk put there to make it look old.

#2: Probus indeed. A base-silver (something like .050 fine, as indicated by the XXI in the exergue) antoninianus, reverse type SALVS AVG (health of the emperor), Salus standing feeding a serpent rising from an altar. Siscia mint, officina-mark delta (fourth). This particular type is listed in the millennium Sear, but I think it's genuine. Very similar to this one.

#3: It is indeed supposed to be a Caesar and Mark Antony coin, Sear #1465, but the colour and appearance of this one give it away as a tourist copy, also.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

Apparently I have been awarded one DPOTD. B)

Thanks Sapyx. I sort of figured that this was the case. I will learn someday to not just buy things that I have a question about. But, every mistake that I make educates me. -Dan
  • i dunno..that raggedy edge on the julius caesar coin makes it look pretty real to me. would be worth investigating, cuz if it is real, you have some coin there!
