  • Cliff Notes version:
Cut card cases are presumed to be leftovers from Topps. They were inserted in cases based on the series (card #). Some cases were mixed series and some just one series (A,B,C,etc.). I believe each set had 3-6 series' based on the number of total cards in the set. As an example, case A series would have cards #'d 1-150, case series B would have cards #'d 151-300. Some cases would be mixed from 2 or 3 different series. They were never intended to be sold and condition is all over the place. Dacardworld has a seemingly unlimited supply of baseball cut card cases from 1978-1987.

For cards that were not issued in series like 1990 Topps, full sheets had 132 cards. The card numbers on the sheets were in no particular order so you could have a card #36 next to a card #97. The second sheet may have card #17 next to #113. The first sheet is Sheet "A" and the second is sheet "B" and so on until sheet "F" being the 6th sheet in a 792 card set. The cut card cases usually are all cards from one particular sheet. A 5000 card cut case of 1990 Topps would produce about 37 of each card on the sheet (5000 divide by 132).

If you are looking for the Frank Thomas card for example, go to the back of his card and on the copyright line somewhere you will see a letter within a circle. This represents the sheet the card was issued on. So if Frank Thomas was on sheet "B", you would not want to buy a cut card case of sheet "A" since there will be none in there.

Sorry but I need to get back to work.

    Hope this helps.
