Cut card cases are presumed to be leftovers from Topps. They were inserted in cases based on the series (card #). Some cases were mixed series and some just one series (A,B,C,etc.). I believe each set had 3-6 series' based on the number of total cards in the set. As an example, case A series would have cards #'d 1-150, case series B would have cards #'d 151-300. Some cases would be mixed from 2 or 3 different series. They were never intended to be sold and condition is all over the place. Dacardworld has a seemingly unlimited supply of baseball cut card cases from 1978-1987.
If you are looking for the Frank Thomas card for example, go to the back of his card and on the copyright line somewhere you will see a letter within a circle. This represents the sheet the card was issued on. So if Frank Thomas was on sheet "B", you would not want to buy a cut card case of sheet "A" since there will be none in there.
Sorry but I need to get back to work.
Hope this helps.
