  • Don,
My command of French isn't that good, but I'll try my best to translate some of the inscriptions.

The obverse inscription translates to 'Tribute of an Inventor of Paris'.

The reverse inscription in the centre refers to '20 Centimes per crayon'.

If you go here & post some photos on there, there's at least one guy who can translate this much better than I can.

I googled crayon mengin and got a few hits.

The first one has your token along with two others, but doesn't describe the token itself. It does go on quite a bit about the subject of the token, which is mildly interesting. (I linked to the babelfish translation of the page.)

Ebay France had a bunch of listings, but none of the ones I clicked on actually sold and all were priced low. (click on the cached links, since most of the auctions have already been purged from ebay's memory)

So, whatever it is, it looks like just another one of those forgotten mid-1800s curiosities. Pretty neat story though.
  • Eric,
I have used Babelfish for translations, but there's a lot of errors that it makes. It is better to get a native Francophone to explain what the inscriptions really mean.
