Albert Pujols - 2008 NL MVP

frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,098 ✭✭✭✭✭
Congrats to Albert Pujols. He was just announced as the 2008 NL MVP.

That goes along with the MLB Player of the Year, NL Most Outstanding Player, Sporting News Player of the Year, Roberto Clemente Award winner, and the Silver Slugger Award for First Base.

Now, to go resurrect that "Howard MVP thread". I am a man of my word! image

SWEET! I would have bet on Howard if I was a betting man, though. Not that Pujols didn't deserve it more, just that Howard also had a great year (in most aspects other than avg. anyway image) for the world champs.

I thought we had agreed on a trade for the Ozzie Smith Topps rookie proof for the Pujols rookie? Are you backing out of that? image

Very cool. The only question I have is how long will it take Fandango to update his graphic on his sig line to reflect the new honor for his hero AND will he finally take out the year Pujols did NOT win the award and just be happy with the actual awards won? Congrats to Pujols, his fans and his #1 infatuated fanatic.

    Congrats indeed,

A very good choice, I might have switched the runner-up, with the award winner, to emphasize a championship season a little more, however have no problem with 18 out of 32 voters' winning selection.

I'm a Phillies fan and though I hoped Howard would get the award, I'm not disappointed in Pujols getting it. Pujols is to me just the best hitter in baseball. Barring injuries, he's on his way to a bigger award, the HOF.

Most of us have jobs where we can't monitor message boards 24/7. Cardinals and Pujols fans tend to be unemployed.

Congrats to Pujols, but the race was much closer than anyone will ever admit.

I will take a World Series Championship anyday of the week over personal awards for a player. This would have just been icing on the cake for one of the greatest Postseason runs of all time.

That's what I said in 2006 when the Cardinals won, yet I still wanted the MVP to go to Pujols.

(I can't believe I am even responding to this). I happen to have taken my lunch break right when it was announced.

Why does it always have to resort to mud slinging?

    Shane

  • Congrats - I think Albert should be on his 3rd or 4th MVP by now, but that's just not the way things worked out. He is year in and year out one of the most complete and consistent players in the game.

The top 5 on the Fox Sports writer's ballot were:

    1. Pujols
    2. Ramirez
    3. Berkman
    4. Jones
    5. Reyes

I especially like this comment: "Swap Ryan Howard out for Pujols, and the Phillies win the division by 10 games. "

He gets it!!!! A sportswriter gets it!!!! There is hope that the MVP can be dragged out of the toilet.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

  • And since he's only 33 years old image , Pujols might even win a 3rd MVP before he's finished ...

yet St Louis still couldn't get to the playoffs..hmmmm, maybe Alberto wasn't that great......if he was worth 7 more games, then the Cards would of been the
    playoffs!

Is Albert going to come out and say that he doesn't deserve the MVP since all he could do 2 years ago was cry about Ryan Howard winning, claiming that the MVP should lead his team to the playoffs?

I get it, I just don't agree with it.

For all we know, the Phillies with Pujols could have lost 10 more games then they won.

They could have won 10 more, loss 9 more, stayed the same or you can pick any number
of amounts. You can't, and I repeat, can't claim a team wins more (or losses more) with the addition
of anyone player or players. You can say "They POSSIBLY would have won X amount of games with him instead of Y".

So I'm not sure exactly what that sportswriter 'gets'.

    Steve

    Good for you.

  • Winpitcher,

Then I guess since it is soo hard to figure the contribution a player makes to wins/losses, there is no need to worry about whether a team signs Derek Jeter or Cesar Izturis...after all(according to you), we are just guessing on what their contributions does towards wins/losses.

  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Hoopster I never said it was hard. I simply stated that one can't know for certain what will happen.

Unless of course you have a crystal ball.

Of course GM's can THINK what will happen and thus they will sign and build teams according to what they feel.

Can anyone say for certain what will happen?

Not even you can do that Hoopster.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • If given the choice between two players who play the same position, one of which who hits vastly better, fields light years better, and runs light years better, I am pretty confident I know which one will help my team better.

The ONLY consideration would be salary and how it affects what goes at other positions. Otherwise, YES, the Phillies would certainly be/or have been better off with Pujols. No qeustion, no hesitation. You can call it assuming all you want, but it is as safe to assume that, as it is to assume that today is Tuesday!

What confuses the matter to many is that the team may actually not get more wins(the following year), because there are many variables out of said players control...namely the teammates and luck. This is the error of many people's ways.

<< <i>For all we know, the Phillies with Pujols could have lost 10 more games then they won. >>

And for all we know, aliens might have abducted Pujols from the field; each is equally likely, but who can say for sure? Seriously, that line of reasoning doesn't lead anywhere, it leads everywhere - every possible trade becomes nothing but a random guess. But that's silly. Assuming nothing bizarre happens, the Phillies with Pujols would be expected to win many more games than they won with Howard.

  • i would be willing to bet a portion of my 2001 Pujols Collection that he wont sign anywhere but ST Louis....hes ingrained into the community there...
  • yawie99yawie99 Posts: 2,575 ✭✭✭
I reckon St. Louis is an "easy" place to play in that there's just one daily, the press is generally favorable toward the team, and the fans adore the Cards and their players. The "El Hombre" nickname is so fitting since Pujols could end up the defining Cardinal of at least the first half of the 21st century in much the same way "The Man" was probably the defining player of the last. People would be devastated if Pujols left and he really does seem like a breed apart, but there's just no way the team could match the $200+ million that some clubs would dangle in front of him.

He is signed through 2010, with the Cardinals holding the option for 2011. I personally think that Pujols will retire as a Cardinals player. I don't think he wants to go anywhere, and I am pretty sure the feeling is mutual.
