Card that never was- makes me wonder.

Do you think this would have rivaled the '52 Mantle in terms of price and popularity if it existed?

No, but it would still be a great, great card. I've always wished that there were more Topps Musials, too. I don't think he has one until '58.

Would not have rivaled the Mantle only because it's not a rookie card. It would be like the 52 Mays in terms of value.

The only real difference between the '52 Topps Mantle and Mays is the fact that Mantle is a high number. Their rookie cards are both in the '51 Bowman set (both high numbers), making the '52 Topps of both, second-year cards (and not rookie cards).

The problem with that thinking is there are many examples were the first year card is not the RC and likewise, there are many examples were a second year card is considered a RC. I personally would consider it a RC.

OK, name one instance where the first-year card is from a main-stream, nationally-issued set, and it is not considered to be a rookie card.

1952T Mantle has never been, nor never will be his rookie.

PS it is the most overrated card in the hobby after the T206 Wagner.

Back in the 80's the 52 Mantle was always called his rookie.

Bowmans were not collected like they are today.

Then around 1990 or thereabouts they began to call it his FTC (first Topps card)

That is the way I remember it and I was in the business at the time having a hobby store
    from 1982 thru 1990-91

Were people wrong at that time? Perhaps.

While I agree somewhat that the 52 Mantle is over- rated I disagree regarding the T-206 Wagner.

The Wagner card has at most 100 specimens known.

As for the Mantle being a High number it is in fact a DP card.

One can always find one for sale.

    Steve,

I agree with your point that it is really not his rookie card, but it doesn't undermine its popularity. 1952 Topps is the marquee set of post war cards and Mantle is the most popular player of his time. Add in the fact that it is a second year card of the most dominant brand in sports cards and a high number to boot and you have very desired card. It is what it is. The 1951 Bowman pales in comparison to the 1952 Topps Mantle.
