1965 Topps Baseball Thread

I just recently picked up a few 1965 Topps Baseball cards and wanted to start a thread to discuss current trends with the set. What are the toughest cards at this point? Is the mid series the toughest? What's an 'average' price for a PSA 8 common? (I don't have VCP any longer). Any suggestions would be a great help!

I can tell you from personal experience that any time a high grade Felipe Alou or Rico Carty card comes up, it explodes like a grenade.
  • This recent eBay auction made my eyes pop. Who would pay that much for any baseball card with the name Gates Brown on it?

I'm glad you started this thread. I've just recently started trying to turn a half-complete raw set into a complete graded set. Hoping to go mostly 8s and mix in a few 7s and 9s where they make sense. The average common in 8 goes for about $12-15, I would say. Some of the more populous commons can be had for $9-12. Recently picked up the Bill Skowron in 8 for $17 (free shipping too!) and when it arrived was amazed that it wasn't a 9. Looks absolutely perfect unless you're looking at it from within 9 inches, and even then its hard to spot any imperfections.

Anyway, I'll be working on this set for quite awhile. Look forward to comparing notes.

It is a great set to do guys. Enjoy the run.

    Good for you.
  • I have this set 100% complete in all psa 8's and 9's (#7 on the registry). The set does have several tough cards...#14 (only 30 psa 8's) #21, 22, 115, 245 pepitone, 348 Banks, 349 Miller, as well as alou and carty as stated before just to mention a few.

You can see my set here and look at the pops of some of the tougher cards if you would like.

I'm playing in a slightly smaller sandbox.

  • I admire you Big-Set guys, 660 graded cards is huge and tough to not loose passion for. Working on a 342 card set is tough enough on me. How do you store such huge sets. '65 is my favorite set from the 60s, the waving pennants are fantastic. I love the color combo on the Braves and Orioles.

I store my sets in boxes on book shelves. They do take up a lot of room.

I take out 2 inserts from a monster box and that way I can get 3 rows of cards in one.

It took 3 monster boxes to hold my set.

My set is retired and was at #18 all time when I retired it. I scanned every card.

The set was 7.91 on the registry scale.

another tuff card is #22 which at one time went for 1k, it has since gone down though.

I also found that the middle series cards were the hardest to get.

The last series are abundant even the so called short prints so don't buy into that.

Again, have some fun putting the set together, when I sold I was able to get back what i put into it.

    Good for you.
  • Thought I'd bring this set back to life and mention that I popped a few '65 Topps cards recently, the Carlton rookie in PSA 7, the McGraw (586) in PSA 8, and the Cloninger (520) in PSA 9. I also think the prices are coming down a little on this set, maybe due to the recession or maybe just the ebb and flow of supply and demand. I picked up a common with a pretty average population (can't remember which one) in PSA 9 for $15 on EBay recently. That may be the lowest I've ever seen a 9 go for. Anyone else seeing this. If so, do you think it is temporary or that the value of the set is actually declining a little?

Overal, moving pretty slow on this set, as I've recently started working on three older sets. I am enjoying my very very slow climb up the current finest list, though. image

The market value of individual cards has continued to decline slightly in the past 7 years that I've been following this set. The POPs only get higher. I remember when card #46 Bob Lee was the last card to be graded a PSA 8. It was thought to be an incredibly difficult card to grade out...now it has a POP of 55 in PSA 8.

That being said, I believe the value of a completely graded set will hold its value much more than individual cards.

The good news is that if you really like the set, as a collector, you can build it brick by brick for less money now.
  • I love this set!

Around 1985, a friend of mine had a dad that was a garbage man working in Chicago. He found a box of 56, 59 and 65 cards. I got all the 56 minor stars, 59 commons and 65 stars. I'll never forget the Steve Carlton card (I made some dumb trade and always wanted it back). I'll pick up an 8 sometime soon as it's been too long.

The Yaz card is a favorite of mine too.

I'm focusing on the 78 Topps set but I just bought the 65 #509 for $7 and have the idea of going for the Red Sox team set. We'll see. I just started following the 59 set again today too. UGHHHH :-)
