I think it's the Joe DiMaggio card. The color of the team-name stripe is consistant with the Yankees colors, plus the old-time sturrip visible at the bottom says it's one of the "legends" players they included. I haven't been able to find a pic of the DiMaggio card on Ebay

In short...Alex did not have a contract in stone when they released the cards and Topps cut his photo out of some of the cards issued in packs because of legal reasons.
Actually, he had a contract with Topps (he appeared on their autographed cards). He hadn't appeared in the majors at the time the card was produced, and could not be featured on a mainstream card (he could appear on inserts like the autographed cards previously mentioned) due to MLB Properties rules.

That's right. I stumbled on a Gordon auction and remembered the question posted on this thread. Forgot it was because of the RC rule. Oops. I'm surprised how those white ones have dropped in price since their initial release. Well...not really surprised.
