I remember why I like Canada...

Since I was quite disappointed with the material available (or not available) at the International Expo in Toronto, I was reminded that I love the fact that TIm Horton's doughnuts are on just about every corner ( realize that they're in the States, too, but not near NJ). Their coffee stinks, but the blueberry and apple fritters are pretty dasm tasty! Here's to walking of the calories and finding a few gems to buy tomorrow...

We always pass quite a few of those along the 401 and in Ottawa each year. We always figured they were a dive.
  • I thank you for these guys:

just returned home from the toronto expo myself.....

spoke with several dealers about sales and the responses were not positive. one gentleman told me first-day sales were half of what they usually are for him while another was more pointed, telling me it was a "#%&*$@ terrible day".

met up with fellow board member boopotts for our semi-annual chat and beer. he is hunkering down in toronto for the night and will be attending again tomorrow....perhaps he will have more to report.

Perhaps the dealers would have better success with more realistic prices. I think the days of gouging the public on EX/MT '80s hockey cards is over. While it is tough to question the diehard devotion of hockey collectors, a few of these guys just are out of their gourds.

Sadly, the show is about 60% of what it used to be dealer and table wise, and there are so many more garbage tables (hats, sweatshirts, jerseys, and gold chained wanna be thugs working them) then I can ever remember. Not a lot in the way of OPC baseball (especially sets), limited football (mostly '71 OPC and assorted Jogo as would be expected), and even the hockey (aside from a few of the regular national circuit guys) wasn't expansive. There are a few tables scattered about with some excellent and obscure material, but they are few and far between and the prices are intended solely fot the hard core collector.

There is absolutely no doubt the show is not what it once was, and I agree that there are still the same old guys trying to peddle the same old overpriced junk. However, the two gentlemen to whom I was referring are both top quality dealers (and the one who told me about the 50% reduction in sales is a full-time dealer with a first-rate inventory......and a frequenter of these boards as well).
