Even though I am playing online as I type this, I will say, no, nobody cares anymore...like a lot things, poker was a fad, and it has long since passed. They completely butchered that tournament to try to get better ratings, I bet (no pun intended) it failed miserably.

I don't care because every time I turn on ESPN2 it looks like they are having a WSOP event and I never know if it's a big deal or not. Do they just call the whole poker season the "World Series of Poker"? To me, it's as confusing as the little league and college world series.
  • Hell no, the day the final event was on I saw who won the dang thing on sportscenter, wtf. I cant wait till poker is off tv, except high stakes, that is cool. Farha is awesome!
    Am I speaking Chinese?

Wait'll online poker gets legalized under an Obama administration which I strongly suspect it will, with Barney Frank and crew sponsoring the bill. With the government so strapped for cash, and much gambling legal anyway, this is a no brainer. You'll begin seeing more poker beyond belief in all ways, shapes and forms.....

......Ya ain't seen nothing yet both in quantity and "quantity" - They'll be playing poker on Sesame Street and I'm almost not kidding. LOL

And many people won't care how bad the economy is going...especially when they're always just a winning lottery ticket away, or a winning poker tournament away, IE: a winning gambling jackpot away from getting lucky and striking it rich, right?

Gambling is the new opium of the people.

  • Steve, anyone who wants to play poker can play poker, online at Pokerstars or any number of websites. They can also play in their living rooms, at bars and VFW's all over the place with tournaments etc. They can also go to any number of casinos and play. Really, what is your deal? I know that you think gambling is evil because you have a problem, but what really will change? This isn't the first thing you brought up the Pres. elect and Barney Fife, don't be such a hater image

The WSOP winners IMO are completely made up of people who had 2 things going for them more than 90% of the other players..

    #1-Luck
#2-Got great cards ( which is tied into #1 )

Im sure most would disagree but it is a crapshoot made up of such a large field that anyone with minimal amounts of know how could come up a winner, its ridiculas. I got heavy into it when it first became popular but have grown to hate the game, nothing aggrevates me more listening to players talk about every hand and act like they are more than a book smart player. No limit hold'em will drive you to the brink of insanity!

Actually there is evidence right now that the economy is hurting casinos around the country and a number of them are laying off
employees as gamblers are staying away. Perhaps people look upon slot machines, craps etc. as just a form of entertainment that
can be set aside when they are hurting financially and not really a get rich venture.

Actually, I have nothing at all, nothing whatsoever against playing poker. Hear me?...Nothing.

It's the "exploitation" of those gambling websites and others such as affiliate commission hucksters, portraying how so many out there are making a fortune or earning a living playing raked online poker, which of course is a flat out lie...that bugs me...that's my "deal" - if this exploitation doesn't bother you or you don't see it, then that's your prerogative. And I have never used the word "hate" in any of my dissertations on the subject - I don't hate them - I expose them...there's a big difference...so "hate" is your interpretation, not mine.

The Sands in Vegas is close to going bankrupt - it's in all the news if you wish to read further about it. And you're right that other casinos are feeling the pinch as well.

It would be quite interesting to know how many of these home foreclosures are due to gambling addiction problems, from those making just "one more bet" over and over again trying to hit that illusive gambling jackpot.

I always laugh at the poker ad which states, paraphrase, that "poker isn't a game of luck otherwise why would you always see the same faces at the final tables" - Well every poker player that has played at least just a little bit of poker knows that it isn't just a game of luck - it is a game of pure skill with a chance element involved. I'm not gonna get into any discussions about not beating the rake, because legalized poker in the US is right around the corner, and I absolutely believe that the major companies offering it, will offer it rake free, so it's no sense at this point discussing raked online poker any further.

Suffice to say though that those "same faces' in the early days of TV poker were often at the final tables because they were always the ones entering the most tournaments. I'm not denying that a Phil Hellmuth has tournament skills, but I did a study one time and according to my stats, it is likely that Hellmuth in his 20 years of playing in poker tournaments, has likely in total lost approximately 1/2 million dollars. You can "get lucky" and beat a tournament, but in the long-run, with the tournament cuts and entry fees and other expenses, all the players get ground out of their bankrolls including Phil Hellmuth. And for sure, many of the "faces" seen these days at the final tables are new faces - as you implied...getting the right cards at the right time in the tournament...but of course that luck never lasts.

There's more to it as well and I'm not privy to what the major poker websites pay for endorsements when the players have their website names on their shirts and hats, or how many players get their tournament buy-ins paid for by the gambling websites, so playing tournaments for a number of these poker "pros" is basically risk free, but the bottom line is if any "regular" poker player believes they can make a living consistently playing in raked poker tournaments either online, or brick & mortar, then they will find out one day when they're broke, that they were incorrect in that assessment.

I'm off my soapbox now. LOL
  • Or you can be a genius like Eli Elezra, the hi stakes poker player who bet a bunch of the top players Like, Ivey, Brunson, Hellmuth etc that they would not win the WSOP
Since not one them won He did win $600K
Odds of a top name winning is slim
