Had quite an epiphany today. I recently purchased a flash for my camera to shoot a friend's birthday party and decided to try it out on coins. After the first series of shots I knew I finally found my set-up for shooting slabbed, crusty yet colorful and lustrous coins.

After years of trying different stationary light set-ups, all I needed was a flash... Who would've thunk it?

Very nice pics!! Are you using a polarizing filter? Is this a direct flash or are you bouncing off of a card? -Dan

Dan, the flash is diffused and overhead, pointing just outside of the coin (top). The coin itself is at approx. 25-30 degrees tilted towards the flash. Haven't tried bouncing it yet. It was a spur of a moment kind of thing

TwoKopeiki - You have some of the nicest coins (and pics), thanks for the tip. I don't think it will work as well with my mounted flash, if not - no loss (the beauty of digital photography). What do you use to diffuse the light?

JoesMaName - I just used the built-in diffuser (the pull-tab one that extends out and over from the top of the flash).

Nice pics. It is hard to get the subtle shades of color under the natural darker toning.
