Have you ever seen a PCGS MS69 Saint Gaudens $20?

PCGS has given 10 1908 No Motto $20s a grade of MS69. Have you ever seen one? Did it blow you away?

Who is John Galt?

I recall seeing one of the Wells Fargo hoard Saints, I was still standing after seeing the coin... the asking price did blow me away! image

I would guess that they are from the Wells-Fargo accumulation. Many of those coins were, ahem, ambitiously graded.

I think all of the MS69's are from the Wells Hoard.

You dont see them too often.

I saw one, I like the character marks and price of the nicer MS65 coins over the MS69. There is just something wrong with an old coin that looks new to me. image

I've seen an ultra high relief Saint in PR-69 and it was quite nice. The price, $5,000,000.00 was too much for my pocket book that day.

The 1908s are more like $100K.

This one sold for $80,500 in 2006.

Haven't seen them in hand, and although I don't like early 20th century gold that much, owning such a coin is something I wouldn't mindimage

What's the difference between "character marks" and "bag marks"? About $500?

Old as this may be....I have NEVER seen a 1908 MS69 that looked any different than an MS68...and one that looked like 67!

Those Wells Fargo coins were graded during someone's wet dream. image

I have been told this more than once about the hoard.

  • Most of the hoard coins are overgraded. So much for standards.
  • I hear a lot of trashing of hoard coins and one person who didn't like the MS69 because they don't like coins that look like new...image

We aren't hating on the coins themselves, just the game... image

I held a 1907 EX-HR in PCGS PR69. Link Wonder if they will crack it out to get the plus! image

Seriously, that coin was so perfect that it did not look real. It looked like it was liquid gold. Hard to explain.
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
  • I looked at some Wells Fargo hoard coins about ten years ago at one of those generic gold boiler rooms in Santa Monica. I was looking at a few 67's, but not impressed. Then the guy brings in the closer with a NGC 68 that was a lustrous blazer. They initially were asking $35,000 but I passed, then he lowered it to $30,000, still no interest. By the time I walked out they were down to $27,000 but I knew better. Now a decade later the WF hoard 68's are going for about $16,000-$17,000.

I can't imagine the 69's looking any different than the 68's and neither look as good as an accurately graded 1924 MS67.

I'm sure the 69's look better than the 68's and the 68's better than the 67's. The question might be whether there's a full grading point between each grade. PCGS and NGC
got to grade those all at once so it's not like there was a huge amount of time to allow for different graders and inconsistencies. I've seen some of the 67's and they were
impressive coins. I'm sure the 68's and 69's are even more impressive. I don't see what's so bad about identifying the top 10 coins out of >5,000 pieces. Gem gold coins
do have marks. I would equate a MS67 Saint to a MS66 Morgan. So I would expect a MS69 Saint to be as choice as a MS68 Morgan. They won't be perfect and mark free, but
will be the cleanest 1908 Saint's in existence. I've seen the 1894-s $5 Lib in NGC MS69 and it was far from perfect. Had a couple scrapes on the obverse. But when you have the finest
known by several points, the label is secondary.
