nah, not for one year if the Sox would have had to give up good prospects that can otherwise be used to get some more permanent players
  • my god. his numbers will SUCK in Oakland lol!

No they won't I really think he will do well anywhere he goes. The A's are doing their patented grab and trade thing. If they fall out early they trade him to a contender for more than they gave up to get him.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • I agree that's what the intention is Morgoth, but Holliday's splits are pathetic. They must have gotten a really good deal on this one, because I think Holliday will struggle to hit .300 in Oakland.

I have followed him since he was in HS and he has hit at all levels. I think people will be surprised by how good he will be outside coors.

  • his numbers will suffer big time. he is a great hitter, but Oakland is NOT coors baby.

There is a lot of foul ground in Oakland which makes it harder to hit for a high average, but I don't think it's that hard to put up good power numbers in Oakland.

he would have made a GREAT addition to philly, rumor mill had it that the phils were going for him for a year. Imagine, a right handed power bat between utley and howard....kinda like what pat the bat was supposed to be!

don't rule out the A's squeezing the Phils for some prospects come July 31st in exchange for renting Holliday for the last couple months of the 2009 season

I've found myself scratching my head the last couple times Beane has made a trade. This one perplexes me too. Essentially he traded away everything he got for Haren and threw in Huston Street just to rent a player for a year. I assume he'll turn around and trade Holliday at some point but does he expect to get more for Holliday than he got for Haren? And if the A's do hold onto him, does Beane really think the compensation draft picks will be better than what he just gave the Rockies? Or is this trade just a way to generate positive buzz in the Oakland area to help facilitate ownership's desire to move the team to Fremont, CA? I like Holliday a lot and any team is lucky to have a guy like him, but come on: the A's have very little chance or signing a Boras-represented All-Star caliber player in free agency.
  • i didnt mind giving up street and smith. Beane has a surplus in his starting rotation and bullpen. Smith likely would be either a back of the rotation starter or get pushed into the bullpen, so no big loss there. Street's velocity diminished quite a bit at the end of last year and he's been prone to injury...in addition, they have enough options at closer (casilla, devine, zeigler). what could be the biggest loss is gonzalez. the a's have a paucity of top positional players in the minors...and they essentially gave up their best one for a one year rental. obviously, beane feels the a's can be competitive next year. if gonzalez doesnt become a star and the a's win 10+ more games, this was a good trade.
