Castaldi calls President Bush - Gets PSA 10

I was one of many people to be informed by Mike Castaldi that upon his submission of 72 and 75 Topps Baseball Cards, he got back a PSA 10 on card 232 - Giants Rookies. Although Castaldi first phoned George Bush, he was kind enough to rub it in to the rest of us '72'ers.

Okay Mike, how about an all PSA 10 Graded Set for 72 Topps?

1st Finest Set - 1981 Baseball Fleer Basic - Retired
1st Finest Set - 1981 Baseball Fleer Master - Retired
1st Finest Set - 1955 Baseball Golden Stamps - Cleveland Indians - Retired

    ...And this just in.

Mike has finally stopped running around the house screaming and waving his hands in the air. The Illinois state police were called in to settle the man down.

Now back to our top story...

huh huh huh. . .you said "bush". . .

Seriously. . .thanks guys. On a whim, I looked at the status this morning and it was a surprise to see them graded at all - today is the 7th business day! I definitely wasn't quite prepared to see the 10 sitting there.

But after I looked at the breakdown of the submission as a whole, it blew me away even without the 10.

    114 1972T - 1 PSA10. . .6 PSA9s. . .and 90 PSA8s. . .that means 85% came out as 8 or higher (I specify NQ on my invoices)

    48 1975T - 1 PSA9 & 45 PSA8s. . .so 95.8% of those came back 8 or higher.

*sighs* If only it didn't wipe out the last of my raw 72s. I guess I'll be busy at the Sun-Times show looking for more raw stuff image

  • Just remember me when it comes to doubles time and where your gonna send those bad 7's and extra 8's. And for my sanity, don't contact Carlos, he's on a quest.

    Thanks,

  • C'mon Mike admit it. It really didn't blow you away. You took a great deal of time preparing and pre-grading the cards, so you knew that everything you were sending in had a pretty good shot at getting the 8 you wanted. You know you're good.

    Dale,

Are you trying to lock me out?

Waittil> While I do spend a good amount of time scrutinizing the cards before I send them in, I also realize that grading is subjective by nature. So once they're in the hands of the grader, anything is possible.

Compared to what I usually get, this submission was generally exceptional.
Normally, with 1972s I get right around 80% PSA 8s or higher. However, until now the largest batch of 72s I'd ever done at one time was about 40 cards. I was concerned that I could maintain the consistency with a submission about 3 times that size. While I did get a slightly lower percentage of 9s than usual, the fact that I got more 8s than usual - spread out over many more cards was a small surprise to me.
With these 75s, this was only my second batch. The first batch was 35 cards and only 70% came back 8 or higher. While I did expect the percentage to improve as I learned from the first batch, I never imagined a 25% improvement. As tough as 75s are, I certainly didn't expect that many 8s.

So maybe it didn't "blow me away", but it did easily exceed my (high) expectations.

When I got my (well documented) 1966 PSA-10, I initially saw it on the PSA website and thought it was a typo.
I didn't believe it til the critter was in my hands. Mike, you don;t think you got a PSA-1 instead? - Just kidding, congratulations....jay
  • Mike, can you put a photo of your 10 on your web site when you get it back?
