My neighbor brought to me at the bus stop and asked me about it. I told her I doubted it held any value, but I would take a picture and post it here.

So what can you tell me about it?

thanks Rob

She nailed it, pretty much. A silver British threepence of King George V

The confusion over the silver content must mean that 1920 was the transitional year, right? (I don't have Krause open and can't remember).

That does beg the question of how one tells the difference, if they were struck in both compositions (.925 and .500) during 1920?

Either way, it's pretty much a $1 coin, give or take a few cents.

  • Yes 1920 was the transition year. Without some pretty expensive kit the way to tell is to ring it. Low note sterling silver and high note debased silver. I guess you would need both side by side to be realy sure. In that condition value bullion only.

According to this site the 3d stayed high silver until 1927 when the reverse changed & it went to .500 ???
But I'm out of my league here.
