    Oh, wow!

It's some kind of fake, indeed! Please tell me it's edged! Also, could you include the weight, as well?

This could be a contemporary crude counterfeit, but I'll wait for the edge / weight before sharing my conclusions.

That is one groovy looking fake.

Wassup wid' all the little swirlies in the fields, anyway?

That looks older, too... maybe a contemporary fake? Hm.

Does anyone have an Unusual World Coins catalog? Can you check under "Egypt" and see if it's listed there?
  • wildest looking fake of a Spanish-Colonial silver coin I've ever seen--- that it's a "Ferdinand VII" coin dated "1778" is just the beginning of its oddity! I too wonder what all those swirly lines on the face of it are. If it's at least a roughly contemporary counterfeit, it's a definite keeper, as I've never seen a Spanish-Colonial contemporary counterfeit (and there's a fair number of them out there) like it

There is one listed, but it has the date of 1920.

    41mm
obv. Laureate bust of Ferdinand VII right
obv. legend: FERDIN (retrograde N) VII DEI GRATIA

    rev. Crowned arms between pillars
rev. legend: CAIRO SAGA SAAD MEAWAD

Looks like a copper core with silver plating. Maybe a badly made counterfeit? A token? Or play money?
  • OK I gotta ask, I agree it looks old, but if this was supposedly made as a contemporary counterfeit, why in the world would it have the legends it has on it ? They resemble nothing ever struck in a Spanish colonial mint. I mean it baffles me, I know counterfeiters may not be the sharpest tacks, but they aren't that stupid.

As for the squiggly lines on the surface, it looks to me like this whatever it is was struck through a piece of fabric - both sides. And the entire thing, not just a part of it. But what in the world are all the raised bubble like bumps on the upper reverse ?
    knowledge ........ share it
  • well those raised bubbles on the reverse are meant to depict the bejeweled crown above the shield of arms

And the pillars look more like trumpets.

Dunno what it is -but it appears to be some kind of contemporary counterfiet. Could be worth quite a bit to a some collector of such items. JMO. Bob

  • Is this the same coin? I couldn't get the other pictures on this thread to load.

  • Also, I didn't catch what this coin is exactly it what is worth might be.

I don't remember the original coin, but the one you posted seems to also be an imitation copy of a Spanish Colonial 8 Reales.

Given the roundness, my assumption would be that it's a jewellery imitation, intended to be mounted in a bezel for a piece of pirate-themed costume jewellery.

It's definitely not an actual coin, and not actually from 1778.
