Great baseball related find

Back in 1999, when Sotheby's was auctioning Barry Halper's collection I desperately wanted the catalogue. Sotheby's was charging $100 for it, and I was saving for a Harley, dating a lot of strippers, drinking a lot of bourbon and smoking a lot of cigars. Needless to say, I never got the catalogue. I guess sometime after the auction, the catalogues were available in bookstores. I never saw one…until the other day. I found this one in a Borders outlet store. It has two 400-page catalogues listing nearly 2500 lots. There is a 50-page booklet that has information about Halper as well as the auction process. There is also a 12-page pamphlet with the closing price of every lot. Everything comes in a heavy cardboard storage box.

The store had about half a dozen copies. All but one had a tear in the storage box. This is the coolest thing I’ve found in a while. I still have not gone through both catalogues. I did read enough to figure out that the shotgun Ty Cobb’s mother used to shoot his father did not sell.

I still take mine out every once in awhile. Hours of fun looking through that. I unfortunately missed out on the strippers and cigar phase.

Arch, What was the charge for the catalog? Also, were the dancers male, female or did you get that far?

these Halper/Sothebys catalogs should be a part of any collector's library......I couldn't wait & paid full price back in '99 and I did notice them in my local Outlet Store recently as well.....As an aside, you should look into picking up either the DVD or VHS copy of Halpers collection (hosted by Halper & Billy Martin) that came out about 20 years ago...

as a follow up to my post, I thought I'd add that when the subject of the tape that Harper & Billy Martin made came up, Yogi Berra quipped, "he (Martin) must have made it before he died"

I can't find a pic right now. I ended buying a '93 Sportster in 2000. I sold it in 2007. My life is different now. Wife, two kids, no Harley (no street bike at all), very little bourbon, few cigars, no strippers. Somehow I still find time for cards.

$8 is a steal for that. I bought mine 3-4 years ago and it was still close to $40. I love to look at it.
