1987 Panda Mintmarks

Okay, this may seem incredibly dumb, but I have a question about a coin I received. I bought a 1987S 1/20th Gold Panda in NGC plastic on eBay. Upon receiving the coin and inspecting the MM on the obverse, the coin is not stamped with an "S", but a "Y" rather. Is this correct for the 1987S and I just need to read up more on the series or is this coin labeled wrong? Any input is appreciated.

  • The label is wrong. A 1987-S panda coin should have an "S" mint mark. For what its worth, the mintage of a 1987-Y panda is about 1/3 the mintage of the 1987-S.

    S - Shanghai

I wonder if NGC will charge me to have the label corrected?

Why bother? It's just a label. OTOH you may get extra premium for the erroneous label. image

Wouldn't the incorrect label affect the grade?

What if there was a mix-up at NGC and my coin's label went on another coin? Perhaps my mislabled MS69 was meant to have an MS70 label? image
