In York back in the early 1980's, two worn-out coin coin dies were found - the first ever such find for Viking Age coins. The dies were copied, and these copied dies are used to strike these replicas, normally in pewter. Visitors can even pay to strike their own replica coins, in the authentic mediaeval way, with a hammer. I think my dad "cheated" and bought his from the gift shop.
The dies are actually from two different coins, from opposite sides of the Viking conflict: the side shown on the left is the obverse from a St Peter's Penny (Spink #1014-1016), issued by the Vikings who occupied York and the surrounding territory. The other side is also an obverse die, but not Viking at all; this one is from a penny of British king Aethelstan (Spink #1093). Both coins dated from the early 900's AD.

Apparently I have been awarded one DPOTD.
I had no idea what this was.
