I find the best way is to score all four sides with a small screwdriver several times. Then score a small area several more times until you can get a small tip of the screwdriver in and slowly score each side again prying it apart along the way. This seems to work for me very well.

I've always used a straight edge (box cutter) and pulled it once across the top seam while holding the slab on it's side with the top extened over the table or desk. You can tell immediately when the seal is compromised. From there, I just hold the back firmly and pull the top away. About 95% of the time it peels back without a hitch. In the event that the seal is more rigid, I'll use a small screwdriver to jimmy the edge. It's really quite simple and works well for SGC holders, too...

Considering the volume of cards that I crack out, it is the easiest, quickest and safest way I've found. I've watched others use all sorts of methods and I can usually crack 3-4 holders in the time it takes them to get 1 open. Funny thing is, they tend to damage the cards a lot more often.

So none of you recommend grabbing the slab with both hands and just twisting as hard as you can?

I recomend first useing a hammer and then a pair of vice grips or channel locks to carefully remove the card from the holder. If that doesn't work I usualy try backing over it with my car. That will usualy do the trick.

i rember that from you tube last year ,those kids smushing graded cards different waysimage
  • The methods we use for this is too funny. Each having their own way to get the job done. Personally, I stick the slab in my workbench vise, put a chisel in the seam right above the label and tap with a hammer. Once the two pieces have been seperated at the top you can just slowly pull them apart, they crack right open easily. Obviously care is needed because if you go all crazy the card can fly out and get dinged on the floor or you can hammer straight down into the card, both of which I have done. Thankfully the cards damaged didn't cost much. After cracking about 200 cards I feel like a surgeon now. I do it without even thinking about it. I'm obusek99 and I approved this method.

gasoline and a match can often help loosen the seems first. I do like the idea with holding it in the bench vice first, but I think it would be much easier to use a chain saw or hatchet once you have it in the vice. You just want to make sure you do not damage the card when removing it. Twisting it with your bare hands just doesn't give you the precision needed like a chain saw or hatchet/battle ax. image

If I wasn't such a cheap ahole I would actualy make a video of that. I think it would be pretty funny if you could act all serious while doing it. If anyone wants to donate a graded card to me I will be happy to post it on utube. Maybe once the guy from the 87 Topps rip gets his cards back from grading he will donate one for me to crack. If we are lucky we can turn that nice 1987 psa 6 into a low pop psa 2. I bet the pop report is prettly low for those. We shoudl be able to make a quick buck off that resub. image
