Sorry that was pounds, which equates to about 2,461,865 US Dollars.

    That was the hammer price.

Buyer still needs to add the commission.

This is only the second "world coin" to sell for over 1 million. Earlier this year, a Polish goin coin was sold at CICF for over 1 million, making it the first "world" coin to break a million at auction. Frankly, I thought a Russian one would be first.image 3Mark

  • That coin was in the collection of Grand Duke Constantine Mikhailovich of Russia, who was a prominent numismatist in Czarist Russia, who ended up being shot by the Bolsheviks in 1919.

This coin is depicted in the latest 'Coin News',which was published by Token Publishing in England.

Imagine what it might have gone for, if the credit crisis hadn't hit Russia. image

I find the provenance to the Grand Duke Constantine Mikhailovich of Russia's collection to be fascinating in itself. That must have been one hell of a collection in its prime. Can you imagine stepping back in time with the Duke and retreating to his collecting room to view the collection?

Wow, you'd think lower oil prices and their lower stock market might impact, I guess not in this case.

I stumbled on this coin in OmniCoin quite by accident and thought it was related in an interesting way. I dont know a thing about the medal or the medal's owner, but the posting states: "Medal was intended as a Souvenir presentation to visitors of Grand Duke Geordii Mikhailovich Romanov collection of Russian coins."
