Agent Scott Boras is eyeing Yankee catcher Jorge Posada's four-year, $52.4 million deal as a benchmark for Varitek. Click the link to read more. I'd think that Varitek would hit below the Mendoza line in the last two years of any four year contract.

22.9- 27.5 mil per year, not bad for hitting a ball with a stickimage

And Varitek usually misses the ball with the stick.image

  • Varitek offensively isnt worth $1,000,000 a season; defensively he's solid and calls a good game, just not for Knucklers! no way he deserves 8 figure salary at this stage in his career

Bor-ASS and Manny owe the Red Sox $7 million of the extra value they alledge Manny brought to the Dodgers.

So which team will be dumb enough to give Manny 4 years and $100 million? Here are my non-scentific probabilities:

    Yankees 50%
    Mets 20%
    Angels 20%
    Dodgers 10%

really, you think NYY will be that stupid? I figured they'd spend big money for pitching this year + try to sign Texeira

Gadzooks. Tek has been great over the years, but since he dropped 20 pounds of muscle and all of his bat speed after the crackdown he is just an average catcher. Boras would be wise to not overplay his hand here. The stuff with Manny has to have eroded whatever was left of Boras' relationship with the Sox anyway.

I am really torn on the Varitek issue. He has been a valuable asset for the Sox for a long time. They made a good decision to sign him to 4 years after the 2004 season.

Obviously, after last season his offensive value is next to zero but the problem is - who are they going to get that is significantly or even a little bit better?

Both sides have a strong case - there is no way anybody is stupid enough to give Varitek a 4 year deal let alone one for 52 million. But on the other hand if the Sox let him get away - who can they get to replace him?

Yes. $1.3 billion stadium, Pay-Rod wants him there, and the irresistible urge to stick it to the Red Sox. Would not surprise me if they sign BOTH Tex and Mannywood. Which means their starting and middle relief pitching will be from inconsisent to sucky again! image

well, if NYY signs Manny, I sure hope they're smart enough to put him in right field. Even Abreu looked OK out there
