I bought this in as part of a large collection. It was labeled West Africa. I can not figure out what it is or what is "on" the coin.

I do find it interesting so if anyone has a guess i would appreciate it.

Any help or comments here would be appreciated. What is this coin? Can I do anything to get the junk off it? Whatever.

I think it's German states, but can't see enough detail to tell for sure. I am fairly sure that it is not West Africa.

I would try acetone and then olive oil to remove the gunk

1768 Louis XV, but I have know idea as to the denomination. Maybe a pennies worth of knowledge

Yep, it's a French copper, 1768, Paris mint (mintmark "A" below the shield on the reverse).

The denomination will be determined by the diameter, as coppers of this time period all had very similar designs. A sol will be about 27mm across, a half-sol about 24mm and a liard (or quarter-sol) about 22mm.

Thanks for the info and comments all. I will try a long olive oil soak but to be honest I do not hold out much hope.
