refs/umpires asking for autos

I was just wondering today during a basketball game how easy it would be for refs or umpires to amass an awesome autograph collection!! I mean would players say "no" to a ref or an ump? probably not right. Do you guys know anyone who was a ref or umpire? and see if they have a crazy stash of goodies at home image

I thought I remember hearing that umpires and referees are strictly prohibited from asking for autographs or other memorabilia so there can be no perception of bias. Basically it is would be a conflict of interest.

That would be a blatant conflict of interest for refs/umps to do that, if not outright bribery.

Didn't Ken Kaiser get in trouble for that in the 1980's?

I went to high school with the son of an NHL linesman and he had an amazing collection of autographs and game used items. He would travel along with a lot of the teams and stay at the same hotels etc on the road and would gather stuff then.

Didnt some NFL ref get in trouble a few years back? If recall correctly he was amassing sigs and game used things. I believe ESPN did an outside the lines on him and actually had some video with sound asking Farve for an autograph and Mike Homegurn for his hat. Wish I could remember his name.

I have a friend that works with an NFL ref (yes, he has a day job). He says that it is absolutely forbidden - and he also mentioned the Brett Favre thing fur72 wrote about. I also asked if it was okay for an NFL ref to get an autograph from a player in another sport and he said he thought that was okay so long as he didn't use his NFL status as a means to secure the autograph.

If I had a chance to ump or ref a pro game, then I sure would be asking them all for autographs!
  • Had a relative ref the Super Bowl between Rams and Steelers (1980?).

He gave me and my brother signed place mats from the banquet. Cool stuff.
