1889-CC $, real or fake?

coolestcoolest Posts: 2,281 ✭✭✭
I am not a Morgan dollar guy but this coin looks odd to me.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1889-CC-MORGAN-DOLLAR-AU-SLIDER-EXTRAORDINARY-COIN_W0QQitemZ270295203923QQihZ017QQcategoryZ139811QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I sure someone on this board might be able to give a better answer.

Fake. Looks like a half-way decent die cast counterfeit. Surfaces are grainy and the date is all wrong.

Edited to add: And check out his awesome feedback! Avoid this guy like the plague!

    Absolutely fake.
Although the date and mint mark appear to be the correct style, the whole coin has a cast look.
The edge reeding doesn't look right either.

I guess I'll go against the grain here...based on the pics the coin looks okay to me...no better than XF though. On the other hand the auction just seems hinky to me...the look of the obverse just doesn't match the reverse. The coloring is completely different along with the wood grain background and then the green on the reverse.

I don't believe the the obverse and reverse are from the same coin (look at the backgrounds):

How does this guy avoid cc charge backs? Buyers just put the coin in a drawer and forget about it?

The obverse looks sort of real, although the 9 in the date looks goofy.

The reverse, however, looks completely bogus.
    When in doubt, don't.

Yep, fake and that's why he's trying to sell it again! Got it returned or knows it's coming back.

Well, I sent him an e-mail asking if he would certify it before I sent him money. His (her?) response was: "If I were to get it certified then I would keep it." I say her because the name in the e-mail is "Amy." And yes, I noticed that the coin was previously. The jerk off is just selling cast counterfeits. Let the reporting begin!

Edited to add: The auction's been pulled. Nice.

HAHAHA. Her response: "well if that is all you have better to do than put me in the forums i will take the coin off and i am just going by what the coin place told me and i will list it as a copy." So we have a forum member/lurker selling fakes on eBay....not cool.

    << The auction's been pulled.>>

    Ha! More like ..

The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing.

Yeah - talk about an "error"!

I wonder if he/ she felt the heat?

Ebay should be alerted & this individual put on the watched list!

Ebay initiating making future buyers' IDs private, while certainly meaning
well for Privacy purposes, will only make it that much easier for sellers to screw
people over thereby making it impossible (in cases such as this) to alert past
buyers that they've been had and to take action against such predators.

Stuff like this is criminal in the truest sense of the word and such sellers
should be prosecuted to the fullest extent allowable by Law!

The 1921-D "1921-D MORGAN DOLLAR ULTRA GEM CAMEO DMPL+++ " looks like a real coin which has been heavily polished IMO.
