1962 Silver penny

any chance this is a penny struck on dime plachet? I just bought it on eBay from a seller who has never sold a coin before. Listed as Silver penny, Not the color silver but actually made of silver. It wasn't until after I purchased it that I saw the other threads on silver pennies. Now I wish I did not purchase it.
Edit to add, I am not a coin collector at all. I collect Bullion and currency. Guess I should have done some research before buying.

I saw that auction and took a pass on it. I believe it is plated, The sellers description also called it a proof.

If it were a dime planchet, the stike would be week and undersize. This coin looks plated, Sorry.

Update: the reverse does look odd, something going on there. I do own a 1962 silver cent and it does not look like the one you bought.
  • The planchet does seem a tad small for the imprint.
  • It looks like it has some kind of necklace ring around the outside of the coin from what i can see.
  • Are there any known pennies struck on dime plachets?

Yes, there are many cents struck on clad and sliver dimes planchets as well as struck on struck dimes.

They are however quite rare and expensive. I do own examples of the above.

Good luck in your searches, ErrorsOnCoins

The planchet is too big to be a dime. When a cent is struck on a dime planchet, all the lettering is preserved only if it is perfectly centered, and even then it is obvious that the planchet is smaller than usual.

Looks like it has a bezel around it and that in itself's a good indication it's plated jewelry. There's not much difference in size between a regular cent & one on a dime planchet, mostly the strike is weak.

That 1962 Cent has been plated.

  • Thanks for all the info, wonder how the return will go. Guess this could have been avoided with a little research on my part, O well, live & learn. I'm gonna stick to what I know. Sorry to everyone for posting yet another silver penny thread.

no worries, can't learn without asking questions.

errors are a fascinating field that does require some knowledge.

There are many fake errors on ebay.

There are also great errors on the bay.

  • Update, Got the penny. Most certainly dipped. I shared comment made in this thread with seller and asked for a refund. Stated I would settle for a refund of 49.99 if I get to keep the penny as its worth well 1 cent. Seller granted the refund and let me keep the penny. Guess I'll hang it on the wall to remind me to look before I leap. FYI It did have some type of ring around the outside of it. Looks like it would just pop off tho. Thanks to all for helping.

Either way that is cool of the seller to give you it for a penny. At least the seller is honest if he does give you your money back.

If he's refunding you and letting you keep the penny, you should leave him a positive feedback. If he's not a collector, he may not have had any idea what he was selling.

  • If he does return your money it would be great. I would have thought that even a dipped penny might have a premium on it like say 5 cents? Just curiuos is all.

I wouldn't leave him feedback at all because you are not telling the truth about his item that was sold to you.

Even if you left honest feedback and seller didn't know what he was selling it could send red flags for expert coin collectors biddin on his items and all hell will come down on this seller nic pickin on every auction this guy has.

So get your refund, thank the seller and junk the penny so no one else gets f-ed. JMHO.

Sounds like it was a smooth deal and the seller made you whole again but a 1* for "item not as described" is in order. I see no reason the bash the seller with a neg unless you feel he was trying to scam you.
You can leave positive FB & say "Not happy with item, seller provided prompt refund."
