Now there is an MVP train I can jump on. He, Chase Utley, and Brad Lidge are the three guys most responsible for the Phillies getting to the post season, and winning in it!
Congrats to all three of those fine players. If you guys want to stay on top, Hamels and Utley are the top priority to keep around. Slightly better than average hitting first basemen are a dime a dozen...and some are even capable of hitting a left hander.
Jason Werth is another that should get some kudos.
Utley's play on that grounder that he faked to first then fired home to get Bartlett was a game saver.
Yes average hitting first basemen are a dime a dozen but just how many hit 45+ homers and drive in 140+
per year are actually out there?
3?
Steve
It depends what else he did besides 45 HR, and 140 RBI, AND how many RBI chances he had to accumulate said RBI, AND how many RBI chances he provided for others. When you look at his offensive output, there are more than three first basemen who are better, and many who are right there.
It is difficult to find second baseman close to Utley at all.
