Why do you send in coins to be drowngraded?

I know it is all about the money but.....

OVERGRADED,
If you have a pcgs 64 red cent and it has turned a little and you feel it is 1 point overgraded. Do you study the price guide to decide? Does pcgs give you the difference according to their price guide? I would think given the prices dealers charge it would be more profitable to leave it in the originl holder.

UNDERGRADED,
Most of the coins i have i feel are "A" coins for the grade and a few that are undergraded but 2 points and a few more that are 1 point undergraded. At some point i plan on sending some in just to get them into holders to match the rest of my coins. I can see the benifit of getting a upgrade more so than a down grade.

Do you look for overgraded coins just to send them back in? I suppose some collectors or dealers do that as a way to make money and pay the bills?

Well, going by your title, I only dRowngrade them when I feel like they have been bad little coins and need to be punished image

Now, I have DOWNgraded a coin or two, that have turned in the holder, and have been fairly compensated by PCGS for said coin(s). They used the price guide and the going prices to come up with a number, it appears, and I was fairly compensated.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I've sent in 3 coins for review and/or downgrade and have been extremely pleased with the results each time:

-- A copper coin that grew a big spot and was clearly no longer the grade stated on the holder. PCGS regraded it (down) and offered me very fair compensation for the difference, or buy it outright for a very fair price. I let them buy it outright.

-- A key date circ. Morgan that was IMO clearly cleaned. They agreed and bought it back for a very fair price.

-- A lowball Morgan that they graded Fair-02 I thought was Poor-01. I had it regraded and it came back Poor-01. Yay!
    When in doubt, don't.

With the grade guarantee you get the same coin back and some cash to buy more coins. What's not to like?

Another time might be if you are working on a set in a specific grade and you think one is a little overgraded and you'd like to have the holder with the same grade as the rest of your set. Oh, yeah -- and there's also the PO-1 fetish, too. image

I never have with PCGS or NGC...

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I've never tried PCGS for a mere single point downgrade. The closest one I've returned was 2 points. Most coppers I've sent back weren't offered back at any grade due to the problems. I've been saving the 1 and 2 pointers until I've got a full box to return. I try to do what's right for the hobby.

Why downgrade? When you downgrade, PCGS will pay the difference in values. Effectively, you now have the same coin at the cost of the lower grade. Why is this important? If you're a seller, it's much better to have a coin that's nice for the grade and speaks for itself, rather than a piece that doesn't match what the holder says. Honesty's important when describing a piece for sale, and it's always better to be able to write something glowing, rather than a painful truth.

I've done it several times because I didn't feel comfortable putting the coins back out on the market at their assigned grade. So, why did I buy them in the first place, you might wonder. I bought them sight-unseen.

We had a proof coin in a MS holder. That's the only one so far.
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

I sent in a 35-S walker in an NGC 64 holder that I thought was over graded. They 'conserved' it (I'm guessing with MS70 or something to remove haze), reholdered it, and sent it back to me, still graded 64. It now has slightly better eye appeal, and may pass as a 63 on a good day....
