1911-D Lincoln...Grade?

Sorry for the so so pic here. I really like the color and I have some interest in purchasing this lincoln. Knowing that the pictures make it difficult to grade, what do feel that this might garner if submitted? Thanks

I also agree, with the caveat that the photo's not quite clear enough to accurately discern whether it might be a 58.

But if you pass let me know!

    MS63RB.
Looks like a finger print at 6 o'clock on the reverse.
  • Impossible to tell from the pics, but my gut tells me it's probably a 61/62 RB

  • I think 63RB (as everyone else so far), assuming no rub. Otherwise, 58RB. Problem is (apart from NNC), the seller is asking 65RB money.

The 1911-D was submitted by Collect Source. If it had been self-submitted by "centsles" or by CRC LLC (former ebay seller "simplycoins!", now "4evercoins"), it would almost surely be a dipped AU with a botched re-color job like this one...

The 1911-D, however, appears completely original. Collect Source didn't mess with their stuff. All NNC could do with it was overgrade it. That must have been a distressing situation for NNC. The coins they normally overgrade (as problem-free high end MS) are cleaned, worn, recolored, junk. They didn't have very much to work with here.

A recently graded PCGS 64RB for comparison.

    63RB on the 1911-D

  • nice coin Tyller. I want to build a family tree of mint sets begining with my Grandmother, she had 7 daughters; so I have tons of kin. Most of my aunts are gone, I'll cover that, but none of my cousins seems interested to participate. Her birth year is 1911, I plan to buy the cents first and in slabs. I was told before that PCGS coins are primarily for investing, so in this case I'll go with NGC. Either way the 11-D looks expensive, so I might go with AU58 at FUN in Jan. Copper is not my thing. any advice on color?

But its pretty non-obtrusive -- not a negative impact on eye appeal from my vantage point.

That's the problem with 3rd world slabs and NNC in particular.

Although some (many?) coins in these slabs are original (albeit overgraded), many are known to have been messed with.

As a result, anything in an NNC slab is automatically suspect.

  • Ah, but if you know the series and can independently grade accurately, you can cherry some nice, cheap coins from third-tier holders.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I really like the color, but feel that the coin is overpriced.
