  • Here is what I have , how I came about it and my pm to savoyspecial. Can Anyone help out with more info?

Hi, I was looking for a 1853 pocket piece and came across this on Ebay as a 1853. I wondered about the O also. I saw somewhere that it is a filled O variety. I can't find my Briggs book. I am not sure were it is listed, but it is a filled O variety . PCGS would not attribute it such, they are limited as to what they attribute. I think I will post it and see if any members can help out. Wayne

Update, just found that it is listed in Breens on page 350 as a #3393 solid O, ex rare a chip of the die left mintmark completely filled on coins.

compare ill in Gobrecht Journal 27 (7/83)

Hope this helps, I will post it and see if anyone else can give more info

Thanks for the question, It got me off my .... If I had doe this before it would be attributed.

  • This is the rarest 1853-O Quarter variety. This variety is worth a premium to a Seated Quarter variety collector. (Me)
The filled mintmark is the late die state of this variety.
In the early die state, there is what appears to be a smaller mintmark within it, or recutting. Expert opinion varies.
I believe it may be a Large O over small o.
I think I have a picture posted of an early die state in the Quarters on Gerry Fortins Seated Dime website.
If not I should have a picture saved on the computer.
I can't search right now, as I have some running to do.
    I'll check back this afternoon.

  • Heres a picture of this variety in an early die state.
Edited: click on full size and you can see the mintmark details better.

While a better variety, and probably extremely rare in AU-UNC, these are out there to be cherry-picked. I recall having one of these back in the 1980's and not thinking anything too special about it at the time. But times change. I don't believe the major pop reports track this variety.
