the revs of the 2009 releases are more state quarter blah crap.
i have no idea why people even collect these and the 24+ ones the mint
will put out because suckers will buy them.

as for bringing back the wheat.. no. it is time to move on and give artists
with a sense of taste and style a chance of designing a new classic design
we can all be proud of.

    I agree to a point.

However, I think we can all agree, the proposed 09 designs are a LET DOWN

    a BUZZ KILLER
    a BUMMER
    a POS
    etc etc etc

Instead of reverting back to the wheat back, why not go with some other old-school design? It should be something different, but with a retro look.

Why not the reverse of the IHC the cent that was in use while Lincoln was in office?

They should sh!tcan the cent, nickel and quarter completely. They should have never taken the wheats off of the cent IMO. The memorial reverse was a patently stupid idea.

We have several hundred top quality sculptors in the US. I suspect any one of them could do much better designing a new reverse for the cent. Get rid of the "trolley car" and leave the wheat ears in the past, where they belong.

I agree that the cent should be removed from the production line up. It's simply a waste of money in today's economy. I'm not too sure about the nickel though.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I love the wheat design but I don't think it should be brought back. If the cent continues I'd like to see an entirely new design.

We would all like to go back to our nations "golden age" of coins, but a totally new reverse would be more to my licking for 2010

Actually, it would be fun If they would do a 100 years ago set.

In all of the denominations. Sort of a retro set!
But with so many dollars running for awhile, that would be out of the question.

Or it could be a proof only set or satin finish only set.

Bringin it back just for 2009 would rock. Throw in the VDB too.

  • Thanks to all who replied.

It inspired me to dig out my 57 and 58 proof sets with a loup and say WOW WHEAT IS DA BOMB!!!!

    Moving on.....
  • I always wanted to see a 2009-VDB wheat cent....Guess I won't get my wish image

Take a look at the obverse of a well-struck 1917 Lincoln in MS 64 or better, and compare that to the obverse of a brand-spanking-new 2008 spaghetti-head Lincoln.

Now imagine how similarly unlike the traditional wheat reverse a "new" 2009 wheat reverse would look.

As much as I lover the old ones, I cringe when I look closely at the new ones.

IMO, we're much better off enjoying the wheat reverses of old and leaving it at that.

They ought to get rid of the cent all together, except as a collectible

We ought to go back in history some 270 years and simple put VALUE ME AS YOU PLEASE..... I AM GOOD COPPER PLATED ZINC
If you can't swim you better stay in the boat.......
  • I think since the coins are meant to be commemorative, the focus was on offering new designs that tell a story. As much as I like the wheat reverse, recycling it would be like your football team wearing those throw-back uniforms. Nostalgic for a game or two, but not something you'd want back on a long term basis.
  • No, definitely not. The modern Lincoln cent is a far cry from the original wheaties and adding the wheat back would do nothing to improve the looks. Whenever the mint tries to revive a classic die, it falls far short of it's intended goal, just look at the ASE and the AGE. Once the mint stops production of a certain die, it should not bring it back.

I would like to see some proposed reverses. The reverses for next year, in my opinion, are not very good (except for one). I would rather see the wheat ears than the Memorial reverse, though.
