1934 Goudey Set - All PSA

I don't post that frequently, but I am an avid reader of this board. In fact, avid enough reader to quickly say that I know that this is the "Sports Cards & Memorabilia Forum" and not the "Buy, Sell, and Trade Forum", so please don't tell me to go to another board! image The contributors to this board seem to know their stuff and I value this board's opinion.

With that said, I'm interested in opinions on an asking price for a complete 1934 Goudey set, all PSA graded. It is not the highest rated set, but it is complete. I have the set registered at PSA and the link is here:

http://www.psacard.com/SetRegistry/publishedset.aspx?s=3748&ac=1

The set is currently the 23rd finest on the list and one of 14 complete sets registered. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks.

I think you'd be leaving money on the table selling that set as a whole. You'd probably get a low $ of book for it, whereas if you broke it up and sold individually, you'd get VCP or so on each card, and you do have some 5's and 6's in there.

I think that is on a case by case basis. It really depends the set and demand. Don't tell a few guys who recently broke up their 1972 Baseball sets. It wasn't good.
  • Breaking up the set isn't my first choice, but if it will bring the better value to me, I'd consider it. Obviously, it would be easier on me to sell it at once. Does anyone have any experience with selling through an auction house? Or, is the set of too low a quality that an auction house wouldn't touch it?

Any auction house would love for you to go that route, but im not so sure you would love it nearly as much as they would.
  • Dont know if this helps but an ungraded set (with cards ranging from gd-ex.)sold at the 2008 REA auction for $7,637 .

I would suggest a one-month subscription to VCP, see what the key cards sell for in the grade you have, get a rough idea of what you can get with breaking it that way for the keys. It's more work but you usually get paid for more work when selling a set like that.

If you can get a peek at VCP it's more reliable than SMR or beckett for cards like the ones you're selling.

  • Thanks for the advice.

Nice set. I am probably in the minority but I would think you would get more for it as a complete set through an auction house than selling individually on eBay.

I would like to think that any auction house would want this - I know Huggins and Scott would take it (more and more mid-grade hitting their auction catalogs)
