Question re: Receiving RAW Coins via Mail

RKKayRKKay Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭
As many of you know, I am researching all facets of the 1854 & 1855 LFEs. One importantt portion of this research is testing for metallic content via Scanning Electron Microscope Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX). This is non-invasive testing in which x-rays are shot at the coin, and the usrface layer of the coin is "analyzed." Several months ago, I made the following offer/request:

"I will deliver your coin to PCGS or NGC. They will crack out the coin and send it to a laboratory for testing. The coin (and results) will be sent back to PCGS or NGC. PCGS or NGC will re-slab the coin at the same grade as previously slabbed, with the composition and weight on the slab. I'll pay for the testing. If the coin is not already slabbed, I'll pay for slabbing fees to get the coin graded, in addition to paying for the testing. If you prefer that the previously unslabbed coin remain raw, I will take the coin to the lab myself. I can also send coins in other TPG slabs to PCGS or NGC for cross and testing."

An issue that I have become increasingly concerned about is receiving raw coins, in particular via mail. Especially in light of Rick Snow's recent problem with the people who accused him of switching coins, how do I avoid similar allegations (short of not taking raw coins from people)?

Thanks.

The best way to ensure that a coin shipped is the same coin received is to document the coin shipped with a quality high resolution digital photo before shipping it.

It's unlikely that the kind of person who'd volunteer his coins for research would be the kind who'd falsely accuse you of switching coins. But, if it were to happen, you could always point your finger at the lab. image

I agree. Just a little gun shy.

derryb: Thanks, but my fear, paranoid as it is, is that there is no completely documented chain of custody .

Ask them to cook the coins first. Then you will not be taking chances with raw coins.

Were I you I would establish a contact person at NGC or PCGS who will handle all of the details of the test at their facility and anyone who volunteers use of their coins would send them directly to that contact person and of course the TPG would return them to the sender so that you would never have to handle them.

You must encourage or even require that the person sending coins to you have them photographed for his and your protection. Likewise, when you receive and open the package, open it in front of witnesses and document what you receive otherwise, you're leaving yourself wide open.

There have been a lot of these scams floating around about not receiving back the coin which was originally sent and I, for one, would really hate getting caught up in any possible litigation. It did cost Rick Snow some money to defend himself.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Great idea. I know I can do that with NGC. I may have to call in a favor to do it at PCGS.

    Thanks. Another good option.
