New purchase: 1871-s quarter.

Here is a nice circulated 1871-S Seated Liberty quarter I acquired as part of the set I bought last week. This coin is almost totally original, except it has a few light slide marks (tiny hairlines from friction against the album) on Ms. Liberty's knee and gown. These did not show up in the photos, but the coin should be net-graded to VG10. This was one of my favorite coins in the whole set, despite its overall grade of just VG10, which kept it affordable.
A few minor defects are not a reason to reject an otherwise nice 1871-S quarter. This is a date that is excessively scarce and unavailable, and when one does turn up, it is generally damaged, corroded, cleaned, holed, or otherwise mutilated. I would not be surprised if this was the first time an 1871-S quarter has been posted on these boards. However, please feel free to call up an old thread or post a picture of your example if you have one. I won't get tired of looking at them, nor will anyone else here. Heritage has auctioned just 22 lots of 1871-S quarters since 1993, including possible duplicates. With an original mintage of only 30,900 pieces, it is not surprising that few 1871-S quarters remain today.

My 1866 Philly Mint Set
Considering all the seated S mint quarters that were pumped out from 1855 to 1891, maybe only the 1876-s, 1877-s, and 1891-s are more common than a 1901-s quarter.
