    Hi Keith,

One of my favorites is a book, both authored by and about Cap Anson, titled "A Ball Player's Career".

Kind of Cliff Notes version of baseball history from the 1800's. Starts year by year headlines with 1901 and goes all the way up to 2007. Really cool book with lots of pics and stats for each year with quite a few storylines for each year.

Check out my thread on the Buy-Sell-Trade board. I run a non-profit Friends of the Library sale and am listing our sports books over there.

  • While not in the era you mentioned, if you would like a fun, inside look at baseball from the last owner that actually made his living from his baseball team (rather than a gazillionaire with a toy), I highly recommend Veeck as in Wreck. It's a great glimpse of how baseball was run during the golden age.

    Enjoy!! - Jack

I agree, Glory of Their Times, by Lawrence Ritter (I believe) and also Baseball As I Have Know It, by Fred Lieb. If I remember correctly, Lieb was a sports journalist who lived through the old days and then wrote this book years ago.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Agreed, GoTT is excellent. Also, Henry Yee's book on photography (free with Collectors Club membership )would be a good comapanion to it. Steve

I'll chime in with another vote for Glory of Their Times. Also, maybe not from the era you're looking for but Roger Kahn's The Boys of Summer about the 1950's Brooklyn Dodgers and Summer of 49 (about the Sox/Yanks pennant race) and October 1964 (about the Cards/Yanks WS and decline of the Yanks) both by David Halberstam are also good reads.

It's a phenomenal book that I was also going to recommend. It's just a great glimpse into the politics of baseball through the 40's and 50's. You will really enjoy it!
