Have you ever won a coin that you expected to just "watch"?

On ebay, if you have a full "watch list", and therefore bid on a lot (to move it to your "bid list" while you delete it from your "watch list") to make more room to watch coins, have you ever won that lot?
I guess the bid can't be called "mistaken", but perhaps "misplaced".
Have you ever retracted a bid because of this practice?

I have won at least three PCGS eBay coin auctions that I can think of while placing bids at no more than 10% below current CCDN bid levels for the type. All of these bids were to help me track coins, and I kept all three coins. I wouldn't call the bids misplaced as I got what I think was a good deal on all three coins.

  • If I want to watch something but have no more space on the watch list, I will bid only what I would be willing to pay for the item. If the price is too high or I'm undecided and I still want to watch, I delete something else off of the watch list.

  • You're right, Rella. Maybe "mistaken" was better than "misplaced", but in these cases, a very good mistake. image
It seems like an increase in the limit of twenty lots on the "watch list", is in order.

Yes, well, sort of...I have put in low bids on coins thinkng, " wouldn't it be funny if I won this coin at this price?!" Hasn't happened very often, but once in a while. The best one I remember was a 1998 Kennedy Collector's set on Yahoo. Won the auction for a cool $70. Guess nobody else noticed it was there!

  • Yes, except is was currency (from Heritage).

There was a 1,000 bill in Fine condition (estimated to go around 1500 I think). I think I bid at 1099 just so I could track it, and I won the bill. A bit surprised but it was still pretty cool. I learned a valuable lesson that day.
  • I've never retracted a bid. I never made a bid I didn't mean to make. Looking back there are lots of bids I should have retracted LOL image

You can't retract bids when you make markets on the floor of the stock exchanges. You can't retract bids at other auctions. Either step up to the plate or sit down. I don't know why eBay allows folks to kid around with less than serious bids then lets them retract them.

I wouldn't call putting in a low bid "kidding around." Some days, coins sell for much less than other days. If I put in a low bid, I am hoping that maybe it will be one of those days that the coin goes for a little less. Most of the time it ends up going for its FMV, and I haven't altered anyone's results. I am not going to feel bad because I want to buy something at a bargain price.

I just won a nice coin the other day sort of like this.

It was a snow3 DDO '57 Flying eagle in XF. I had bid 70.00 just to keep it where I could keep an eye on it on my page. (GS bid is 85 I think for a normal '57). I won the thing for 40.00!!!!???!!!

It arrived the other day and was extremely nice! It's on it's way to PCGS for the optional registry coin in my FE set!!

The concept of "watching" a modern nickel with an $8000 bid is a joke! The idea of bidding $8,000 because someone on the boards said it was worth at least $10,000 is absurd. The entire fiasco is rediculous, aimed ay nothing more than running up my bid, imho. If you can't see that, there is nothing that will be said on this board that will change your mind. Do I care that I am not pursuing this coin any longer-not in the least. Geez, I graded (2) MS68FS nickel just last week alone. It's the principle. Don't you also find it interesting that since I pulled my bid days ago bidding came to a complete halt, while before that it was really moving against me constantly. I don't appreciate being "run up" $1 or $10,000 makes no difference image Wondercoin.

I only place bids I'm willing to pay for. Sometimes I place low bids to watch items, and in a very few cases I've won them for much less than I'd normally pay were the item higher on my priority list and had I been paying more attention. I'm glad when it happens, but it doesn't happen often.

Wondercoin, I think you think too highly of yourself. Bidding frequently grinds to a halt on eBay auctions during the middle days of the auction. The first 2 days and the last day get the most bids. You know this. Everyone who sells on eBay knows this. This coin got a lot of bids the first 2 days and then the bidding slowed. It'll most likely pick up the last day. The fact that you retracted your bid had nothing to do with it and you fully know that. Do you really think people saw the retraction that "wondercoin" retracted his bid and now they're all running scared because you dropped out?

I think we all know the real reason why you're pissed. This seller is going to want more money from you when you contact him after the auction ends because he is going to point to the ending bid on the "reserve not met" auction. You weren't run up on an amount you'd have to pay UNLESS you planned on contacting the seller after the auction ended.

Greg: You're strategies are far too complicated (run up enemies, etc). I won't be contacting anyone after the auction. In fact, I could care less about that coin right now. Or, maybe it's just Valentine's Day and although I took the Ms. to lunch today and gave her a nice gift, I still haven't bought her a card (which she is looking for). image Wondercoin.

In the past Ebay did not have a "item watch". I have won too many items by placing bids on them. Right now, I wish I could win more.

If an item has a reserve that is not met, then the price is not "run" up. Just like the coins on Teletrade, after close, they simply did not sell. No information can be obtained from the price.

Pop1, if you win that BTW you are bidding on, ask the seller where my coins from wondercoin are. He is the one who still has them.

dbldie55: Ok, I'll play along. You are buying $8,000 modern coins to "flip" them for $10,000. Did you really decide to deal in moderns? Maybe it is what I said to your buddy Dale at dinner? Welcome to the "modern world" image Wondercoin.

I do like nickels! I also just bought a PCGS 1938 Jefferson to go with my first year of issue Nickel set image

I have never had a bid retraction, I would rather buy it than retract it. (never returned anything either)

I bid on auctions all the time just to watch them. My watch list is always full! I do it mostly to see what it sells for. (keeps me current on pricing) I always lowball the bid... so I have never "won" from doing this.

No, I have never won a watch bid. If my list is full Ijust click FILE/SEND/SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP and make my own watch folder. One time I was on Yahoo just bidding on everything and I bid on some interesting ACG coins with no intention of winning. They usually had a reserve but this particular auction didn't and I was high bidder for most of the auction. I was thinking gawd I'm gonna have to send a check to ahcollectables but luckily I was outbid. That was the last time I bid on ACG coins just to annoy Mr. Hager.

I think it almost feels like the lottery when you bid a very low amount to watch a coin and then end of winning. I would never bid on a coin I didn't intend to keep, but there are times when maybe the coin looks a little unusual and thought it might make an interesting addition to the collection. Most times I never get close, but on the rare occaisions, it is a lot of fun.

Mitch, did I miss something that happened in the last few days? Your reply seems out of character, you always seem to handle yourself in a very controlled manner and today you seemed a little "pi$$ed". I will have to go back and look at some recent posts.

I will continue to "bid to watch". Why change what works?

BTW, does this "auctiontamer" run in Linux, Solaris or BSD? If not, what can I do?

  • I have never retracted a bid, and I am always bidding on an auction to watch the final $ figure. If I should win then I buy it, because I really want the coin anyway. I have one a few this way.
