Pete Rose 2008 Donruss Cards - why the logo?

I noticed there are several Pete Rose cards in the 2008 Donruss Threads issue which have him with MLB team logs as shown above. I for was thinking Rose could not appear on a card with official logo of team. The SportKings cards have Rose but no Reds logo. Can anyone shed any light on Rose cards and why would have not seen logos on him until now?

Wow, I hadn't heard about this set...my favorite brand as a kid...it looks like I'll be wasting some money soon.

And to answer your question, I'd guess they got permission from the Reds organization to show the logo...because the cards don't feature current major league players, I'd guess the rules are a bit different...Donruss doesn't even have a license for MLB products.

I tried to do some more reading/ research to satisfy my curiousity. The Donruss Website does have an announcement stating: "For the first time in 20 years, Rose will have a baseball card in a Donruss set with 2008 Threads Baseball. Authentic autographs and memorabilia from the Cincinnati Reds great will be available in the set, including his own Baseball Americana, Century Stars and Diamond Kings cards." As Donruss does not have a license any longer from MLB I did not think they could use any team logos but perhaps it is as you suggest that they negotiated with the Reds as I look through Ebay at other listings there is a mix of cards without logos and some with logos.

They're very cool cards either way. Neat to see Rose in a Red uniform again.

  • well, i was just looking through the pete's on ebay and man they sure did flood the market. i love pete and i buy what i can get my hands on but , i think maybe they should have made the pete rose cards in smaller #'s. sport kings did it, tristar did it with the 2 signacuts that i have.don

As my Pete Rose collection is a side project and these are modern cards anyway, I'm glad that they'll be readily available. I can pick up a few without cutting into my main foci.

  • but what sucks about it is that psa will not grade them..and sure there are card in the pete rose master set that are not mlb. i bought alot of the sportkings cards but the only place that will grade them is beckett.(beside the back yard graders) i wish the psa would be able to just psa/dna the auto on most of the cards.. don

They won't even do a PSA/DNA auto cert? That's very odd.

Yeah, but they've already gotten your grading fees...they won't care. That surprises me they can't grade them...they grade other non-licensed issues...
