Guess the grade - Vermont Commem Half - GRADE REVEALED!

CoinJunkieCoinJunkie Posts: 8,772 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks to all who posted. I've been looking a long time for a Vermont that truly knocks my
socks off colorwise. Not sure any exist. I finally bought this one from Northeast Numismatics
at a show (actually I think it was part of a trade), and am quite happy with it. Very nice
and lustrous coin in hand.

Quite a bit of chatter on the portrait but great luster and toning- a super looking coin no matter what the grade may be. Is the flat spot on the jaw wear....? if so I gotta say AU58.

I agree, great looking coin, very nice toning.

tough call from the pics (good pics, tought coin). Gotta go to the rims for a final decision - 58.

Too many hits to be a 64 but I also defer to the rims and they tell me AU58 at best.

I never did like this particular toning.

    Cheers,

    Bob

What is it with the folks in Vermont. Do they varnish everything they get their hands on?

I would suspect the original holder was the cause of the toning. How were these packaged- wood box?

I think it looks nice and I'll guess 65 or 66. I don't see any wear.

Here's mine... these are nice in that they have such high relief

  • MS63

Here is a white MS64 for comparison (I think its a MS65 but twice PCGS says its MS64):

64 looks like a rough grade for that, I agree with you and call it a 65

the reverse of the Vermont has to be one of the nicest backsides I've seen image

Looks like an "Any Given Sunday" coin to me...

65 because I think the high contrast is bringing out more noise that might otherwise be readily visible in hand (and even then it isn't a lot of nose).

AU 58, cleaned and retoned. If PCGS grades it higher than that the syrup was blocking the view of the intern grader that day.

Cleaned and retoned???? with that kind of luster I don't think cleaning is possible and this toning seems to be pretty common on these.

I think the AU58 people are looking at the rear of the jaw line and seeing that area as "rub"

either way, tough to grade from a photo

A blind (really visually impaired is the prefered term) person
would have less trouble discerning rub

Sure looks like AU58 to MS63 to me. I don't much care for the toning. Sorry.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I think it is a totaly original uncirculated coin. I really like original toning, like on this Vermont, as long as the color is nice and there is enough luster coming through. This coin appears to have both. I would guess the grade to be MS 66. Tough to grade from pictures so an AU grade would not shock me!

I think it's spectacular and would happily add a VT half that looks like that to my collection.
