Edge lettering classic vs. modern

Did they apply the edge lettering to classic coins without regard to which side of the coin was face up when it entered the edge lettering machine?
Similar to the current circulating edge lettered coins A/B position lettering. Thanks

The planchets were fed through the Castaign machine to have the edge lettering applied prior to being fed into the coin presses. Luck of the draw whether a lettered edge planchet was fed into the press with the lettering up or down.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
