Column of the Goddess

After the fall of Napoleon, Austrian forces laid siege to the city of Lille. They bombarded the city continuously for 8 days, but the townspeople refused to surrender. So, the Austrian forces gave up and left.

The "Column of the Goddess" was erected in 1845 to honor those citizens who refused to capitulate. This 32mm bronze medal was struck to commemorate that event, and every (later) medal that I have seen pertaining to the city of Lille has included this monument somewhere in the design.

Probably a better post for the World & Ancient Coins Forum just a step away from this one (the US Coins)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Right now, I'm just happy that some of the members have helped familiarize me with posting photos. It's a "work-in-progress", and I'll learn the ropes as I go.
