...you finally reach the #2 spot and you realize there is absolutely NO WAY you will ever be #1!

My Norse medal set.

Yes, there's only five people in the registry and only three medals in the set but it is still a fun set. I think Mr. Gopher State has #1 locked up for the rest of eternity. Wish he would post photos though.

In theory/Technically, Gopher State's set can be matched, but only once!!!

...of course that would take an arm and a leg to find and purchase those Top Pop's.

I hear you!!! I made it to like number 7 in my series with out braking the bank. To move to the top if it was even possible would be in excess of 10 times more money that i already have spent. Spot number 7 cost like 20k and number 1 would be in excess of 250k if you could even locate the coins.

I don't really hate it as being in that position simply established some long term goals.

Like Lee stated....I have my own goals in the Complete Dime Set. I am not competing against Larry....he is in a level of his own.

My first goal is just to complete the set, which will take a lot of time an $$.

Then I would like to upgrade as I can....and end up with no coin lower than XF40...and a set grade in the 50 to 60 range. This will take forever and then some more time.

Yep. Did that with the 1968 mint set.
No way I could become #1. I was #2 for awhile then decided to sell the nickel that was the deciding factor (it was/is a $500 nickel). Used the money to buy my son and I a few other coins instead and am fine being where I am in the set now.

I'm not much of an upgrader. I'd rather buy nice stuff at a grade that I can afford and not look back. I suppose someday I might find a thick in 66 at a reasonable price but it won't get me any closer to #1 so my decision to purchase wouldn't be based on the registry.

Look at the positive side of this.....

You at least KNOW what it will take to be in 1st or 2nd place.
Modern sets are in a constant barage of new varieties that can change the registry each year.

Well someone has to fill in the slots from #2 down. Thats where we "Aint Gonna Happen Guys" come in.
We fill those slots so the top place guys can get their awards and look good sitting up there in first place.
And remember, the more "Aint Gonna Happen Guys" we get up under MR. #1, the better he looks.

Just remember higher graded coins do not necessarily mean better looking coins.
