  • Interesting designs. I like the face on the sun. I know nothing about what you collect - I guess I'm missing something - I better do some research!

I suppose it would depend on the wife and the coins, and on ones respective standards for both.

  • Andy - Good to see you at the sale. Congratulations on picking off almost all of the coins on my "favorites" list. Luckily the competition wasn't as strong on the coins / currency as it was in the stamp sale.

  • My meager purchases below. I have always admired the Bagaces tree used on the obverse of the early CR coins. Not sure if that is the accepted nomenclature for the tree but it should be.

    The tree is a ceiba.

  • Andy - Although that may be the genus name for the tree, my understanding is that the actual use is related to a "liberty tree" type symbol based on a specific example of the tree. That story may be foklore but that is what I have heard ..... (I'll check my sources)

    Found this quote googling about:

The ancient Maya of Central America believed that a great Ceiba tree stood at the center of the earth, connecting the terrestrial world to the spirit-world above. The long thick vines hanging down from its spreading limbs provided a connection to the heavens for the souls that ascended them.

MrEureka - On the last two pieces you show, does the reduction in mountain peaks reflect a corresponding reduction in states to the Republic? I think it had dissolved around 1850?

In any event those are fantastic pieces.

Here's an 1828 half escudo that I did not buy.

    image

Note the early date and the trio of mountains. I can only assume that the reduced number of mountains is due to the small size of the coin.
