local ad for pickle jar full of silver dollars!

check out this ad I found:
from a estate sale ... I am receiving about 400 silver dollars from the late 1800s to early 1900s. this coins are have been stored since 1988. my grandma owned a taveren from 1919 to 1966, she would save the silver dollars in a huge pickle jar. and since her death hes estate has been hung up in the courts.. long story short I am the one to recieve the coins... check back around the 15th of Oct for pics and a full count of the coins. I am selling ALL coins to the highest bid ..cash or paypal. this is a "pig in a poke" buy.
I have received the silver dollars and will post all pics towards the middle of this coming week... I will be having the weight of ten silver dollars (from the small jar) and the weight of an empty jar to determine the actual count .. I'm sure by doing this it will be very close. one interesting thing did come about, besides the large amount of silver dollars in large jars.. there was a one quart fruit jar in the box that had a few silver dollars with interesting colors on them, sorta like the a rainbow effect and seeing that the jar was not sealed shut I checked on the dates ( the other jars are sealed shut and I will not crack them open..the condition of those look bright and nice ) these are some dates in the small jar... 1890P..1921..1921S..1927P..18790..and more, coins look like new. below is just one of the weird coins that I thought was interesting. the wining bidder will have to pick up (and pay) the coins at the local police dept in my area as that's where the are stored as of today 10/12/08. UP DATE 10/16/08 will be taking bids for 411 silver dollars until Nov 11th.. at that date the person with the highest bid price receives all 411 coins... avg bids sofar have been between 7 and 8 thousand dollars

Well it was just there a few minutes ago???
I would have a hard time buying them without seeing them...but I am not a buyer anyway!
I guess picking them up and paying at the police station...one can assume its not a scam.
Out of curiosity what would they be worth?

Silver is $9.35.........I'd imagine, since they're an ounce of silver( correct me if I'm wrong) it'd be

411 X 9.35 = 3842 silver value...........intrinsic, it depends. 7 to 8K sounds high.

I'm wrong..........silver content is .77344 OZ

so about 3/4 of 3842 is the silver value. I might still be wrong.

Sounds to me like someone trying to pretend they know nothing about coins so they can scam someone wanting to take advantage of someone who knows nothing about coins.

I found it. first link said it had been deleted. Very suspicious in that the coin imaged has album toning. Seems odd that it would end up in a jar. if there were 400 or so, based on comments, it seems seller has received bids of roughly $20 each. That's a premium over melt and that's about all one should pay for raw dollars without more info. I doubt this is legit.

So that is called album toning! I was wondering why it looked that way(with the center clean). As a newbie its fun to learn from the board. Album toning would certainly make one wonder about the pickle jar claim!

Now if they were stored in an egg carton I could understand them getting albumen toning.

I should clarify that it "looks" like album toning. It may well have been artificially toned.

It's pretty easy to claim that "avg bids so far have been between 7 and 8 thousand dollars."

Funny how the seller just happens to mention the "silver dollars with interesting colors on them, sorta like the a rainbow effect." I agree with the previous poster that the seller knows what he's talking about but is making an attempt at acting stupid by pretending to not really know much about coins and by intentionally mispelling words. I also believe that the quoted bids are only given to intice the reader to make a higher bid than 7-8 thousand dollars. I suspect the quoted bids are non-existant.

I would think this would be easy enough to verify with a phone call to the local PD.
