I Found An 1800 Year Old Kennedy !!! (dial uppers beware)

OK... maybe not
But here is how I spent my evening. I opened up a mint sealed $100 bag of 2001 Kennedy Halves. Then I divided them into MM's. What became apparent right off the bat was that the "P" coins were NO WHERE near the quality of the "D" coins. In fact many, I'd guess 30% or so of the "P" coins all had very similar damage all in the same area around the rim of the OBV's. On most of the coins I could easily pick the MM even if I didn't look at it.
At any rate the more "P" coins I looked at the more interested I became in what the heck had gone on. What looked wear was very consistent coin to coin. Then I found the king of the pile... a year 200 coin that also only said Libert on it.
It makes me wonder what is going on with these. Is this some sort of die wear or planchet problem or what ? I realize this isn't the normal "classic" post or "show me the money" post but it is numismatic and I would love to hear your thoughts.
Here's the pics... my apologies to the dial-uppers...
Here's the MM's divided:

Here's the one that had the most wear or damage or whatever it is... There were many like this one, just not as bad.

Here's a closer look with different lighting: (edited to make picture smaller)
